Sarkozy's Sixth Republic

In a speech yesterday in the French region of Périgueux, Nicolas Sarkozy continued his early Presidential campaign insisting that France required a new republic. Sarkozy's Sixth Republic would represent a clean break from the Fifth, and a clean break from Gaullism. Reiterating that his "clean break" would mean more for those who have less and that it would represent a change from the old ways of immobility and inertia, Sarkozy's speech was aimed at those who have attacked him in the last two weeks. He continued to assert that he would end the 35-hour working week, introduce positive discrimination, a mandatory civil service, and free choice of schools for all parents... Sarkozy was certainly among friends - old and new. He was joined by Foreign Secretary Phillippe Douste-Blazy as well as Thierry Breton, both of whom appear to have rallied to the Sarkozy cause in recent weeks... Should he succeed, it would almost certainly be the end of the Fifth Republic.

Chirac and de Villepin have been trying to undercut Sarkozy. I think they will live to regret that, particularly Chirac who will be bound for prison should he live out the rest of his term.

...and work more than 35 hours per week for it... he's merely dangling the carrot from the end of the stick.

Sarko is riding the perfect wave...he understands the threat of islam better than any of the other candidates. And on top of that he is a big fan of Reagan and Thatcher...

He will be tough to beat.

I think you're right, however, he won't poll even 40 per cent of the vote, first ballot; at the runoff, between himself and (presumably) Segolene Royal (the Socialist candidate), the French will have to decide between Sarkozy's tough approach and the promise of political reform, and what is sure to be the Socialists' dhimmi conciliatory approach. By the time of the runoff, the jihadists will have tinkled off enough of the French to give Sarkozy a mandate.

And then, Chirac goes on trial, because Sarkozy won't help him now, assuming he'd planned to before Chirac's latest anti-Sarkozy moves. De Villepin will also abandon Chirac after Sarkozy's victory, and (my guess is) cozy up to Sarkozy.

Yep.

The terrorists are pulling the voters to the right all over the world.

For that, we owe then our thanks.:-)

Well, he sure as heck can't start preparing the ground too early. I hope he manages to attain office with a mandate, but I can't help envisioning any effort at serious reform as setting off a series of protests, strikes and riots that will make what Margaret Thatcher dealt with look like a tea party. It's difficult to imagine any French leader overcoming this.

It is absolutely amazing that leftist ideologues who have spent decades attacking Christianity are so slow to grasp the real 1,300 year old threat from Islam. Without Christianity to defend them, the Post Modern Pagans will be forced to confront Islamic Fascism all by themselves.

I agree.

But what is even more amazing is that the seculars of Europe and the U.S. are beginning to awaken and see that the power of Christ is indeed their salvation...in this world and the next.

The French are not ready for Anglo-Saxon economics. I'd say France's next President will be Socialist Segolene Royal.

The French unions strike 'round the clock and calendar, regardless. Sarkozy insists that the 35 hour (alleged) work week has to go, but not as starkly as Chirac and de Villepin insisted; they had to back down, he hasn't, and I think the public by and large support the change and admire his tenaciousness on this. Plus, they must love the turmoil of his personal life. ;')

The problem with the french is that they are as changeable and moody as a spoiled child. This, IMO, is why a Sarkozy victory would give him a meaningless mandate. His constituents would very soon turn on him. While the french like the fantasy of self-sufficiency, they do not like the reality. They want guarantees of prosperity and security. The fact that this is impossible does not faze them. They want what they want just like a demanding child. Historically, they have shaped up only under a strong authoritarian hand.

Here he is...

Attorney General Charles Bonaparte

In case you're wondering, he was the grandson of Napoleon's brother, Charles.

The French are not ready for Anglo-Saxon economics.

Recent DNA testing has shown that the 'Anglo-Saxon' British Isles is actually the 'Celtic Isles'. There is an old thread on Freerepublic about that. The Germanic Angles and Saxons apparently were either mostly bred out of the British Isles or most of them came to America.

Historically, the French have referred to the British as a nation of 'Shop Keepers'. Perhaps that was true a few hundred years ago, but is not true of modern England. The U.S.A. represents the nation of 'Shop Keepers' now, that is if the socialists and fascists over here can be held at bay. Celtic DNA is also very present here in America too. A lot of Irish-Scots-Welsh were forced out of the 'British Isles'. We also probably do have a lot of Germanic Anglo-Saxon DNA here in America since many early Americans called themselves German. After Rome was forced out of continental Europe, numerous Germanic Tribes basically overran the main continent. The French actually have a lot of German in them (Frankish Tribe).

introduce positive discrimination

That's the EU way of talking about affirmative action. That's not a good plan as it will mean making sure part of all sectors including security will need to hire an equal share of Islamists.

"The French actually have a lot of German in them (Frankish Tribe)."

Some Frankish and Viking, but French too are, at base, Celts, like the British. Ethnically, the British and French are the closest kin to each other in Europe. And it shows.
