SULZBERGER SLAMMED AS PROFITS DROP 39% (Teddy launches surprise attack on Pinch)

The New York Times Co. reeled yesterday from a 39 percent drop in profits as it came under a surprise attack from liberal politicians for gutting and damaging its sister Boston Globe...... pressure mounted on chief Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger to plug a drain of newspaper ad dollars being steadily siphoned away by the Internet. The profits bomb came as Sulzberger got scolded yesterday by a group of prominent politicians and business leaders in Boston, led by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), claiming Sulzberger and his team have committed a "terrible shame" by gutting the paper since acquiring it in 1993.

In a letter to Sulzberger, Kennedy and others said "a troubling pattern of disinvestment, downsizing, outsourcing and cost cutting has emerged" to damage the fabled paper. "A shrinking news hole and the elimination of bureaus have stung the morale of employees facing in creased health care costs and wage freezes." The group said "Boston Globe journalists have risked their lives and, in some cases, given their lives" to uphold "a long and storied tradition of excellence." "What a terrible shame it would be if the premier brand in journalism - The New York Times Co. - was responsible for doing genuine harm to that tradition." The Times has eliminated nearly 400 jobs at the Globe and closed several bureaus to save money.

Patches can be the Publisher, his moron nephew Bobby Jr.can be Editor, Ted can even be the Food Booze critic in his spare time. When Michael Skakil gets out of the slammer he can be a Crime Reporter. Hell, the whole family can work there.

It would also be the 1st time any of them ever actually worked for a living and earned a days pay. It would also be the 1st time any of them paid taxes and experienced that little thing called FICA.

Why it would be a HUGH success!

I see your point, but doesn't divestiture mean TOTAL elimination of the investment, whereas here they mean 'failure to re-invest' or, at most, 'reduction in investment'?

I am surprised that the NYT company would rather go bankrupt than look at what it is doing and make changes. All they have to do is look down the street to Fox and see what "Fair and Balanced" can do. Seems their love of socialism is greater than their desire to remain a viable business.

I've heard the Glob's editorial board is packed with "buds" too. It's been too long since I read it to
remember if they were packing before or after the Slimes bought them.

There's another story about the Glob and Ted. Back when Ted was first running for the Senate (iirc), and JFK
was in the White House, the "Ted cheating at Harvard" story became known to the Glob. JFK calls the
publisher or editor to the White House, and asks about the treatment. The Glob guy says "X point font
headline, above the fold..." JFK says "no, no headline, below the fold, etc."

And the Glob has been loathe to hold any Dim pol to either the law or acceptable standards of decency ever since.

Allow me to decorate your thread a bit more by reiterating how The Glob apparently feels that American soldiers in the Afghanistan and Iraq theaters wear standard issue tennis shoes, blue do-rags, and winter camouflage sans insignia. As we all know a couple of weeks after the blogosphere exposes porn interspersed with Abu Ghraib pictures as a hoax Boston Globe ignoramuses publish this story about two morons still taking the hoax seriously:
