GOP's Solidarity on War Is Cracking
Los Angeles Times ^ | October 20, 2006 | Noam N. Levey, Janet Hook and Richard Simon

Posted on 10/20/2006 3:14:53 AM PDT by John Carey

Public anxiety over the Iraq war, already reflected in polls and demands from some Democrats to withdraw U.S. troops, is now prompting calls for change from some unlikely quarters: Republican congressional candidates.

Across the country, GOP candidates are breaking with the White House over how long troops should remain in Iraq and who should lead the war effort.

Even some of President Bush's staunchest allies in solidly Republican states are publicly questioning the administration's war policies, while others are scrambling to find new ways to talk about Iraq in the face of rising voter frustration over management of the war.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), who earlier this year stood by Bush during some of the most damaging sectarian violence, this week said that Iraq was in "chaos" and that it was "worth trying" to partition the country into semiautonomous regions, a proposal that sharply diverged from White House policy.

As a conservative I too am getting upset with the way the war is going. However, it is because I don't believe we are fighting the war hard enough. Do I want to withdraw like the dems want? NO. I am upset with the GOP for even giving the dems the time of day when it comes to the war. Hello, Gitmo! The thought of the democratics having the majority to make the rules regarding the war is far worse in my mind. The other thing the dems will never understand is that conservatives tend to be more free thinkers, we don't just toe the line.

In Montana, Republican Sen. Conrad Burns insisted in a candidate debate this week that the president had a plan for victory — but "he's not going to tell everyone in the world."

When Jon Tester, Burns' Democratic opponent, asserted that Bush had no plan, Burns replied: "We're not going to tell you what our plan is, Jon, because you're just going to go out and blow it."

Democrats ridiculed Burns' claim, comparing it to the "secret plan" to end the Vietnam War that was attributed to Richard Nixon in his 1968 campaign for president.

Amazing isn't it?

Nice piece of journalist slip of the hand, implying Bush had a secret plan

People like Kay Bailey Hutchinson and John Warner (Marine Corp officer) can't be flippantly dismissed as "cut and run conservatives". I think they want to WIN (and so do I) but it's now apparent to them that some new strategic methods are necessary to accomplish this.

Even many generals have expressed similar feelings.

The NY Times had a article on how the Republicans were infighting yesterday. I guess this is their new strategy.

All my friends are Republicans, and the only people we're fighting against are Democrats.

Conservatives are bailing out of the LA Times. Witness their dismal financial performance and internal strife about firings, etc.

Their message has always been --War is wrong and War is lost. They have done everything possible to actualize those beliefs. Now, they inherit the certainty of diminished financial expectations but they still cling to anti-capitalism and anti-Americanism as their chosen flags of war.

However, it is because I don't believe we are fighting the war hard enough.

I'm right there with you, mom. I'd like to see our generals pull a page from Black Jack Pershing's book, and declare that we are dipping our ammunition in pig's fat, and pig's blood will be poured into the graves of insurgents.

AFAIK, that would not violate the Geneva Convention.

Well I am part of a group that will lobby for more Conservative legislation after this election. My contacts tell me that the people that make decisions know that the base will have to be listened to if '08 is to go well for us.

I know it is hard, but try to have a little faith... and get involved in letting them know what it is that you want.

It's pretty sad that based ONLY on the headline, I can pretty much name what newspaper(s) a story is from.
