Dems to Use Moderation if They Win House
AP ^ | 10/19/6 | ANDREW TAYLOR

Posted on 10/19/2006 1:26:01 PM PDT by SmithL

They're mostly a liberal bunch. Yet the would-be chairmen in a House under Democratic control promise to rule from the center. They'd have little choice, given the likely balance of power they would confront if elected.

George W. Bush would still occupy the Oval Office, and no one thinks Democrats could win control of the House by more than a few seats next month. And that would include three dozen or more moderate "blue dog" Democrats.

The dynamics ensure that despite the overwhelmingly liberal cast of the chairmen-to-be — as measured by liberal interest groups such as Americans for Democratic Action — the early agenda would consist of bills that could garner Republican support.

Those include legislation to raise the minimum wage, empower the government to negotiate lower prescription prices from drug companies for the Medicare program and end tax breaks for companies that move U.S. jobs overseas.

"If we do take back the House, there will certainly be a Republican president and there may well be a Republican Senate, so we're well aware of the constraints," said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass. "But I think there are some things that we can put out that will put some pressure on: minimum wage, negotiating with drug companies."

What won't be seen is any serious move to impeach Bush, even though the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, has introduced a bill calling on Congress to determine whether there are grounds for impeachment over the government's warrantless wiretapping program.

Conyers already has been overruled by Democratic leaders including would-be Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, who dismiss any talk of impeachment.

but the efforts of conservatives has had a profound impact on the Democrats, effectively making many Democrats conservative/moderate than was commonplace thirty years ago.

I knew the democrats 30 years ago, the current batch of democrats, sir, are no conservative/moderates.

BS! The Democrats are in an effort, trying to lie their way to victory. This is just the latest example.

If you look at the record, Iraq has been funded completely to the requests of President Bush, some terrorism legislation actually has been passed, and theres been no impeachment(yet!

All that is under Republican control of Congress. You really believe that Pelosi, Rangel, Conyers, Reid, Kennedy, Durban and Leahy will stay the course so to speak if they take control of the House and Senate?? How can you compare what happened under a Republican Congress to what very well could happen under a Democratic congress?? And nothing I stated as what could happen is based on anything other than where Democrats have stood in the current Congress or what they've said they'll do or should do if they take control of Congress.

Do you deny Democrats tried to kill the Patriot Act (Harry Reid bragged that he had killed it--prematurely), that the majority of Democrats voted against the president's terrorist interrogation bill or that they rejoiced over the liberal judge in Michigan killing NSA wiretaps?? And when they're already making it their stand to make an early withdrawl from Iraq, how can we not assume they'll try to defund the war to make it happen?? They'll have to do all those things to please the Democratic left wing or face losing the support of their base in the 2008 elections.

I am not basing my opinion on anything other than what I've heard out of them or seen them already try to do...and simple common sense. Nothing about these extremist radicals running today's Democratic party we should assume is beyond them. They've already shown the lengths they're willing to go to obstruct EVERYTHING this president tries to do including by the way his judicial nominees, which they've voted nearly in lock step in opposing him on in his entire legislative agenda since 2004. Has there been any major vote in the Senate where more than 2-3 Democrats joined with Republicans or in the House more than 15-20 Democrats joined with the majority? I'm suppose to believe that will change when they take control? I'm not quite that naive!

My mouth is hanging open from that snippet you posted. The only people who beleive that BS are dyed in the wool commies. Democrats of 30-60 years ago are more conservative by today's standard that amny of today's Republicans.

'Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.' Barry M. Goldwater, 1964.

Yet that is exactly the sort of "moderation" we may expect from Dem'crats.

"Moderation" is one of those tactics that shall be selectively applied. Also, some liberties would be taken with "extremism", in which case it is actually considered to be "moderate".

He who wins the war of words first gets to define them.

Nice try, AP-Dem-Lap-Dog. We've seen for six years how "moderate" the Leftist Democrats are, and we can't trust them, or you. They want our money to buy votes so they can have the power to run our lives. That will always be their agenda, and it is anathema to freedom-loving citizens.

These are the same fanatical anti-Christian bigots who think the Berkeley free-sex, socialism, drug and perversion movement was a good and moderate progression of our cultural fiber.

As long as billionaire radical leftists, like George Soros, and prime fund raisers like MoveOn, control the purse strings, Democrats won't have much choice on what to do.

Right. And they will not push their radical leftist agenda. And they will not stop the war on terror. And they will not impeach Bush. And they will not repeal the laws which allow the government to catch terrorists. And they will respect the rights of white Christians and Jews.
And if you believe that you also believe in the tooth fairy.

Pelosi first 100 hours - her words
Day One: Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation."

Day Two: Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Time remaining until 100 hours: Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, maybe in one step. Cut the interest rate on student loans in half. Allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare patients.

Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds _ "I hope with a veto-proof majority," she added in an Associated Press interview Thursday.

All the days after that: "Pay as you go," meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority.

To do that, she said, Bush-era tax cuts would have to be rolled back for those above "a certain level." She mentioned annual incomes of $250,000 or $300,000 a year and higher, and said tax rates for those individuals might revert to those of the Clinton era. Details will have to be worked out, she emphasized.

"We believe in the marketplace," Pelosi said of Democrats, then drew a contrast with Republicans. "They have only rewarded wealth, not work."

"We must share the benefits of our wealth" beyond the privileged few, she added.
