When U.S. President Harry S. Truman signed the Presidential Succession Act of 1947, the "man from Independence" surely did so with the best interests of the American people in mind. But the feisty thirty-third President of the U.S. could not have imagined the potential impact of that act 60 years later.
The bill signed by President Truman revised the order for succession to the presidency. Under the revised law, the U.S. Speaker of the House is in line for succession to the presidency, after the vice president.
No one anticipates that either George Bush or Dick Cheney will die anytime soon, and certainly it seems most unlikely that both men would expire at or about the same time.
Nonetheless, prudence dictates that we remain mindful of the fact that Dick Cheney has a history of serious heart disease. And although George Bush seems in excellent physical health, he did just turn 60 years old, and has been, and continues to be, under enormous stress owing to everything from the war in Iraq to Mark Foley's sexually explicit Instant Messages.
Although we Americans are loath to face it, the fact is that a tandem of terrible events could conspire to leave America without a president or vice president.
In that unlikely but catastrophic situation, the reign of U.S. power would automatically pass to Dennis Hastert, current speaker of the U.S. House.
However, if the Democrats were to gain majority status as a result of the November elections, that doomsday scenario would become even more of a nightmare because the new Speaker of the U.S. House would be none other than Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Democrat from California. She would thus become the forty-fourth President of the United States and the most powerful person on the planet.
Let me repeat that very slowly: If the Democrats regain majority status in the U.S. House, Nancy Pelosi would be in line to become president of the United States should tragedy befall the president and vice president.
Can you even imagine the bug-eyed Pelosi a mere two or threat heartbeats from the Oval Office?
Just the thought of a Pelosi presidency should cause all voters -- regardless of party loyalty -- to think twice, or more, before voting for any Democrat!
Pelosi To Drain GOP Swamp, Backfill With Taxpayer Dollars
Nancy Pelosi also seems spiritually uplifted by the raging "page" scandal gripping the nation. Indeed, there is an extra spring in her steps, more sparkle in her eyes, and the San Francisco liberal seems to be enjoying those breaking news bulletins about decadence and immorality being on the march in Washington, D.C.
In her excited euphoria over the prospects for personal political gain, Pelosi seems to have lost sight of the fact that several innocent children have been harmed, perhaps irreparably. Pelosi's lust for the Speaker's mantel is apparently more powerful than any concern for abused children.
Perhaps the stench of immorality reminds Pelosi of her beloved San Francisco? After all, the California congresswoman is accustomed to being surrounded by those who practice a perverted version of "Sex in the City," so the current scandal probably makes her feel right at home.
Although Democrats have visions of retaking the House next month, that is not a given. Five weeks is an eternity in politics; nearly anything can happen over that term.
Nonetheless, Pelosi has already started work on her "Housing Cleaning" http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/10/06/ap/politics/mainD8KIV12O0.shtml agenda. Items at the top of her list include:
-- Sever link between lobbyists and legislation. -- Enact all recommendations made by the 9/11 commission -- Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour -- Cut the interest rate on student loans in half. -- Allow government to negotiate directly with pharmaceutical companies -- Broaden types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds
To accomplish all of her socialist dreams on a "pay as you go" basis, Pelosi plans to roll back some of the Bush tax cuts.
Thus, her scheme is really "Tax as you go."
Nobody has ever accused Nancy Pelosi of being the sharpest knife in the drawer. But her plans to remake America into a benevolent socialist state have been tried again and again, and found lacking.
Besides, Pelosi needs to face the fact that George W. Bush may find much useful life left in that veto pen that he has used only once in six years. Democrats are very unlikely to secure a veto-proof majority in both chambers, so Pelosi's dreams are little more than nightmares in waiting for the bug-eyed liberal from la-la land!
I really believe that the Senate already has the votes to convict on any impeachment of the President and vice-president. The spineless, liberal distinguished Senators on the Republican side give only occasional, lukewarm, bitterly coerced support to the war against terrorism, often subject to severely restrictive constraints like the terrorist bill of rights and conditioned upon ruinously enormous pork-barrel kickbacks to their campaign contributors.
After the Democrats sack the House and impeach Cheney then Bush, the distinguished Senate Republicans--overwhelmingly liberal RINOs already--will cast their lots with their distinguished Democratic comrades under intense establishment-media influence. In previous biennia, a telephone call from Karl Rove or some other Republican political operative might remind these spineless but distinguished RINO Senators that their reelection depended critically upon the perception that they support Bush. A Democrat triumph and the attendant media circus will convince distinguished RINO Senators (that's most of 'em) that conservatism has passed thoroughly discredited into the dustbin of history and that their careers depend upon their embrace of liberalism.
LOL
It takes a majority vote of both houses to approve a presidential nomination in a VP vacancy.
all kidding aside-a hillary clinton/nancy pelosi team running the white house and house of reps would probably start a civil war as soon as they tried to seize privately owned firearms-i'm not blowing off steam-there is a serious agenda backed by george soros and being pushed by ted kennedy, chuck schumer, pelosi, clinton, feinstein, boxer, conyers, and the rest of their cohorts to do just this-i don't think they have any idea the anger they would unleash when they try-i hope this never comes to pass, but it could-let's hope bush gets to appoint two more supreme court justices and that ginsburg and stevens have to leave their posts for whatever reason-that would give the country a chance at least
Doug, you mean her eyebrows weren't always halfway to her crown?
Ah, you Californians... somebody needs to tell Nasty Nancy, having some doctor make you look like a refugee from a circus sideshow does not equal eternal youth. More like very ill-fitting old age in her case.

"Doooom Dooom! Nancy as speaker, Hillary as President! Be sheep to us! Dooom! Dooom!...Dooom, doom! Liberals won't say what their agenda is! Doom! Dooom! Then again, half the time, neither will our side."
ROFLMAO! Unfortunately, they usually WILL state their entire agenda, but only the part they actually feel like passing is their 'mandate.' Meanwhile the rest of the 'agenda' is subject to the ol' "just a few more Republicans and THEEEEN we'll be able to pass that" line and the "we can't afford to spend political capital on an item like that when we have (insert distraction issue here)!" line.
With Gore's ridiculous attempts at overturning the election, and now what looks to become an election-year tradition of routinely claiming our elections are fixed and should be challenged, the security that marks the US as the palce to invest and rely upon is being degraded.
The Clinton impeachment should NOT have been about Lewinski--it should have been about China, about lies, about missing files, about FBI files, and many other things. The Lewinski thing should have been just part of it. Whatever I think about the matter--he should have resigned over lying under oath--the fact is most people believe it was "just about sex".
Now we hear incessant droning about Bush being Hitler, failure in Iraq, secret prisons, etc.
ALL of this is meant to weaken the very things that make the US what it is--the best-defended, most secure, most powerful nation on Earth.
If the Democrats win both houses in this election, George W. Bush will be removed from office. If they win only the House, George W. Bush will be impeached, though perhaps not removed from office.
If the Democrats win both houses, it is possible but not as likely that Dick Cheney may also be tossed out of office.
What all of this will do is show that in a ten-year period, the US will have had anywhere from one to three impeached presidents. We will be seen as about as stable as a Third World nation. And next election, who knows what will happen, what either side will be forced to do to deal with the results of this one.
Go ahead and flame away, but we casually call names at anyone who dares warn of what could very wello happen after a Democrat win in the next election. But we are veering perilously close to the toppling of our government's security, and thus our nation's. We will have a government made up of the dregs of both parties nickering while our economic stability erodes, foreign investment retreats, jobs vanish, our retirement accounts evaporate, etc.
Now imagine the moves the terrorists, NK, Iran, China will make.
I'm not being hysterical. I'm being realistic.
Tell that to the ghost of Richard Nixon.
I have a case of tylenol in my basement - just in case.
They say suicide with tylenol is quick and painless.
The Commie Democraps are going to try to impeach Bush if they gain control of congress. This would really p!ss off the commies. Cheney should resign, and the President should appoint Ann Coulter Vice President.
Can you say, "Nauseating Nancy?"
ha! Hillery WOULD NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN!!!!
