Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

Um....didn't we get Alito AFTER the Meirs Debate?

Yes, but Alito was already poised to get a seat. Miers was to be a team player, Alito is a individualist and it's too early to make a judgment as to how he will perform. This years cases may tell the tale, but I am quite sure miers would have been just fine and would have followed Thomas and Scalia. Alito is not a team player IMO.

Excellent point! It stumps them because they know it's true. I mean, George Soros is the number one supporter of the most liberal groups in the country, and he is a through and through to the core hard line socialist. He wants to make America the NEW Soviet Union. Too many stupid Americans support the Democrat party even though they don't like socialism because they're totally ignorant of reality.

WooHoo that was mighty fine Zell.

Did you Chrissy's show that Zell was so pissed at? He brow beat Michel Malkin and kept twisting her answers trying to get her to agree with his spin that she thought sKerry deliberately wounded himself. She kept saying it was his fault because he shot some rock with a RPG and the shrapnel came back and wounded him, not that he deliberately was trying to wound himself like Chrissy was twisting.

Then he kicked her off the show.

"When the chips are down, and it's a choice of a RINO over someone like The Beast, I will support a patriotic America-loving RINO over an American-hating commie leftist. Some of these conservative pundits are operating on a 9/10 mentality, excusing the anti-American behavior of the left."

"If you want to get rid of the RINO's, and advance conservatism, you do it in the primaries, not when it really counts."

110% agree!!! Well said!!! Bless you for that post. Perfect.

I hardly ever listen to Savage because he makes me tired all over.

I listen to Hugh Hewett via strreaming audio instead.

Stevens is almost in a constant state of bad health. It's pretty frail and from what I hear he's in a wheel chair much of the time. And there are rumors that Ginsburg has cancer again. Neither of them are good bets to be on the court two years from now.

From what I've seen of McCaskill, he's a total putz. Talent is better then him in all areas. Talent is a REAL conservative. No way Missouri will elect a liberal hack instead of Talent.

Chaim Potok is an amazing writer. He can develop tremendously moving plots and characters with the most unemotional prose. The scene in which Reb Saunders finally tells Danny, through Reuven, why he raised Danny in silence is heartwrenching.

I see the FR resident troll is back today. MurryMom posted this on the DOW passing the 12,000 mark today.

Mucho gracias, Senor ex-Presidente Bill Clinton!
Bill and Algore made us rich in the 1990's and now they are doing it all over again. If the Republicans want to blame you for terrorism, nuclear weapons in North Korea, failure of the Iraq occupation, and rising hostility toward the U.S. government throughout the world, the least they can do is give you and Mr. Gore credit for the 12,000 Dow.

America's greatest living ex-President just keeps on giving and giving.

A few years ago before he went into detox Rush went on a two-week Bush-bashing rant during a radio ratings sweeps period.

Not remembering that....He went in the year we went into Iraq and I am pretty sure that he never went on a Bush-bashing rant. Maybe you can find it and post it if you are so sure it happened.

Isn't McCaskill a she? But I think she's a putz, too. I believe Rush said earlier she believes the conspiracy theories about the gas prices.

Amen. The only way I wouldn't vote is if my only choice was for communist loving liberal Democrats. But if Democrats were the only choice, there would be no election, because we'd be living in a communist state.
