Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

I'm also surprised none of Savage's listeners questioned him re: democrat donations recently. Maybe they did, but I didn't hear it.

I can understand both the idealist and realist viewpoints, but when it comes to this, the idealist mindset has NO PLACE being put into practice. I liken it to there being a retail item that you want, and it is in a store for $100.00, but you feel outraged because you saw it in another store for $55, but it was sold out. So you complain at that store and they say they're sorry, but they're selling it for $100.00 and you really want and need it. Just because it sells for much less in another store, but is sold out there, doesn't matter! It might as well be free for all the price matters if there are none to be had. IF it's important to the person, and if they REALLY need it, they'll shell out the $100 and be glad to have the item even if it cost a little more. REAL conservatives will vote Republican next month. Just because the GOP isn't as conservative as we'd ALL like it to be, is a STUPID reason not to vote for the GOP that is about 80% or more what we want it to be. That's 80% better then the ZERO% conservative values we'd get from the Democrat majorty in Congress. It's just that simple. Conservatives who won't vote in November are NOT real conservatives. They're gutless wonder mouth pieces with big talk and no walk. Period.

Gorby--who the hell asked you? And by the way, a little laser treatment would take care of that unsightly blotch on your face.

No survey, poll or stories based on such do not take into account that (Republican) voters are more informed than ever before.

DUmocrats are still DUmber than a stump.

Exactly right! People who claim to be cosnervative and care about conservative social and fiscal values, and then not voting this November, they're not conservatives, they're moderates at best, and are all talk. It's that simple.

Sounds like they're just a bunch of gutless liberals who claim to be Republicans. If they're really conservative and really care about Conservative values, they'll be voting for Republicans in three weeks.

While the DNC doesn't have $10M to just toss around to another campaign committee, the DNC apparently has decided to go into debt to come up with the extra cash DSCC Chair Chuck Schumer has been pleading for from DNC Chair Howard Dean. The actual amount of the loan the DNC is taking out is not known as the committee holds out hope they can raise nearly everything they need before the election. But a line of credit has been opened.

ROFLMELAO!!!!!! Maybe this is why Carville said that if they don't win this year, they won't win ANYTHING for a long, long time.....
