Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

Basically, none of these people will lose their jobs regardless of WHO wins. Unless of course, that old Fairness Doctrine kicks back in.

It will if the RATs get control. So it's a vicious circle.

I used to have Instapundit bookmarked. I read many blogs during the day.

Instapundit has become too cool for me. It is trying too hard to be relevant. No longer check it out anymore.

Just saw Alexander "Breaking" of course, MSNBC, saying as he came out of the testimony just now... that they had a meeting personally on Foley with the speaker. They've said fifty different things before... must contact the usual bloggers.

...Laura Ingraham...

I haven't heard Laura calling for Republicans to stay home. I hear her calling for conservatives to hold RINOs accountable by making them vote conservative.

Yes, she is calling for Hastert to step down. I am to, as leader, but not as a member of congress.

The sad part is how many of these friggin morons are on Free Republic.. They would rather punish 50% conservatives than punish 100% liberals.. I often wondered if people really were sadomasochists.. these people are proof.

Rush is giving a lesson in consequences of 'staying at home' to 'teach the GOP a lesson': The possible election of John McCain.

The same people hurling insults and invective at conservatives today (including Rush) will be the first ones cheerleading for McCrazy if he is shoved down our throats in the '08 primaries.

They will forget his opposition to Bush tax cuts, his Gang of 14 role, his flirtation with the Kerry VP spot, his coddling of Gitmo prisoners, etc., etc.

And why? Because Hillary will be so much worse. LOTE strikes again - just like this year.

As I speak, Rush is predicting the same thing. He'll conveniently forget it when he joins the Straight Talk Express in two years, spouting the same lame LOTE nonsense he is spouting today.

BTW, because of the possibility of a fifth anti-Roe SC justice, I am voting straight ticket Republican on Nov. 7 - although seeing the kool-aid posts of this thread (and others) should have me questioning that decision.

The Amazin' Mets had better get it together tonight... :-(

It's better that they lose. It will make it easier for the Phillies next year.

I flipped on Scarborough as he and 2 other genuises were talking about Sara Evans divorce vis-a-vis that dance show. Joe made a crack about congress and internet porn and of course the requisite big-haired female had to tell us that the husband had run for Congress as a Republican. Chuckles all around. (click)
Stupid man. Someone should have told him that perverts can only succeed, nay, excell, as Democrats.

Right now at 11:45 AM Central Daylight Time October 18, 2006 Rush is railing against conservative ideologues who threaten withholding their votes because the GOP Congress has strayed off the path.

It seems to me that it wasn't so long ago that Rush was one of those railing against Dubya because Dubya wasn't governing in a sufficiently conservative manner.

I seem to remember Rush saying that he was a conservative, not a Republican.

Of course Rush was stoned out of his mind at the time so I guess we have to cut him some slack.

Sensei, she is just another critical voice now hurting Repub turnout.

Trying to blame Hastert for the sins of Foley is dumb. If he covered it up, that's different, but there is no evidence he did.

"Rush is kicking serious @$$ today. Telling it like it is."

I think he is demonstrating that he really does not understand some of the dynamics of what is happening. Conservatives believe in issues and ideas. Rush seems to think winning is simply defeating democrats regardless the political priorities. Theoretically he is saying it is superior to vote for a Republican crook than a conservative leaning democrat.

Rush is laying things out very well right now.

Instead of sending the Republican Party a message by staying home and not voting, why don't we send the following message:

Dear Representatives and Senators of the Republican Party,

We the people, the Good and Patriotic AMERICANS, who have entrusted you with OUR power to run this great country will reluctantly go to the polls in twenty days and vote to retain control of Congress. On November 8, we expect you to LISTEN to the PEOPLE of this country, to band together, like we will have done the day before, and set into motion the Conservative Agenda.

We do NOT like how you have wasted the opportunities that we have given you over the past years, but for the good of this country, we have decided to give you a final chance. Do not let us down. Complete the agenda that you have promised us. Give us our country back. Give US OUR Ownership Society.

Sincerely,

The TRUE Americans

As of this date, there's no evidence that an actual crime has been committed ...
