This stuff is
not dancing. It's a standing lap-dance. To compare it to Elvis and any previous generation's semi-suggestive dance styles is either naive or disingenuous.
There's nothing sensual or artistic about it. Watch MTV for a while and you'll get the idea. It's sex with (some) clothes on, that's all.

"When everything was so successfully dumbed-down, presumably to accommodate all visa vi hare brained schemes such as "inclusion" the die was struck.
I'm afraid this is what we all get now, gross banality."
In a damn nutshell! I am surprised these liberal teachers of today would say or do anything about this........more likely to pass out condoms : )

Sorta on topic....
But in many countries, women dance with women....men dance with men. You know, hand holding circle dances etc. Think "Zorba the Greek" or debka's etc....
The reasons are many....
Religion, culture etc. It changes the focus from couples and gender to the actual dance itself. Guys get to act all macho and show off for the chicks....
The girls get to act all dainty, pretty and flirty.
Saw something like this in a Persian nightclub in Vancouver. Parents, grannies and babies were there too.
But the girls got up and danced together and the whole dynamic changed. OK, maybe its because Dad and Grandpa were there watching the boys like hawks ;)

Mt daughter and her 18 year old cousin recently attended a Halloween party. Their costumes were, IMHO, quite conservative; one dressed in O.R. garb (I'll leave to you to guess which one) and the other dressed in a '50s era skirt, blouse, sweater & hair (think "Happy Days").
When I inquired about her evening the next day, her comment to me was they were the only girls who were "dressed". She spoke with wide-eyed incredulity describing the costumes worn by the other 'women' attending the affair. Apparently the 'slut' & 'hooker' look was very popular; the costumes worn by the other girls transgressed well beyond risque.
The interesting irony is that the conservative nature of my daughter's and niece's costumes made them stand out amongst the crowd so much they both won the contest for the best costumes at the party.

Oh, that's my pet peeve. Smashing cake into each others' faces at your wedding. Even when people are laughing, it's got hostility to it. People who do this aren't mature enough to get married.

I've always thought it was the people who plopped down (or got Daddy to plop down) $20000 to $50000 for "Her Big Day" were the ones too immature to marry. These people place more emphasis on *The Wedding* than *The Marriage* .
Silly cake traditions are just that. Any reading into it comes from the personal baggage of the Reader, nothing else.

"Well, kwap! I'm reeling from that sharp detective work..." Yea well you weren't dealing with a kid here, oldsters were taught how to perform basic arithmetic y'know.
Else your schtick might've worked. :o)
"...but honestly, I was 11 years old when best friend and I went to Elvis movies."
If that was during the mid to late 50s then it'd make you older than Landru, if OTOH it was during the early to mid 60s it'd make you younger.
Hmmmm applying some [more] sharp detective work I'll opt for younger.
Your familiarity with go-go boots swung it, BTW.
"But, gogo boots? The only ones I had were white..."
HA!!
Awwww c'mon now, Ff.
Were there ever any other kind/color?
"So there were no black marks on the floor. ;o)"
White tops Ff, but, black soles.
...a *revelation*? ;^)

It was definitely just my opinion, sorry if that wasn't clear. (And I agree with you about expensive weddings, especially those that put the couple or their parents in debt).
I do think it's immature behavior. And definitely low-class.

I's not just done at proms. I traveled to my young nephew's wedding about five years ago in a rural county of Kentucky. It was a lovely Catholic wedding and reception meal.
But when the band (sound system with DJ) started playing, it all went downhill. The young folks took to the floor dancing this "freaking" style. Quite a few people left at that point. As a relative, I thought I must stay, but even I left shortly after a friend of the groom straddled the groom's mother who was sitting, begging her to lap dance.
My brother was terribly embarrassed but did nothing to stop this behavior. When I got an invitation to his daughter's wedding a few years later, I told him I would have to decline. He assured me that his daughter would not allowing that type of dancing at her reception. And it was a lovely wedding and reception.
Oh and by the way, for those of you who think this is the same type of rebellious dancing as we did in earlier years, you might want to know that same sex couples engage on the floor as well as forming orgy circles.

And I bet they "smashed" wedding cake, too. ;)

"And the more adults cry out, the more they'll continue. I'm thinking of the reaction to Elvis. Um, so I've been told. I'm too young to remember. ;o)"
I chaperoned one or two of these school dances. What I saw was not remotely as innocent as was the Elvis hip gyrations. What I saw one usually sees in a pornographic video.....or so I've been told. ;o)

~sigh!~ I see you're too polite to ask outright: I am 54. I wasn't a big fan of Elvis' so I can't recall what movie it was.
And yes, most of the gogo boots had black heels. Mine were stretchy and had slender white heels. I'm a Froufrou, dontcha know! ;o)

"In a damn nutshell!" Well c'mon my friend we were also taught "logic" while in the system so the roots of this crap elementary. ;^)
"I am surprised these liberal teachers of today would say or do anything about this..."
Why?
Dr. Frankenstein had a similar reaction once he understood what he'd created wasn't about to obey 'em. :o)
"...more likely to pass out condoms"
HA!!
Why not, Lord knows sjb.
...they sure didn't pay for 'em. {g}

Then again, since you never witnessed or heard of such a thing back then, it must not have happened and it's my memory playing tricks on me.
You saw this in the fifties at a school dance?
"A teenage boy dances behind his winter-formal date, hands on her hips, thrusting his pelvis against her while she hitches up her satiny gown and bends at the waist".

At every step conservatives objected to the increasingly inappropriate material, only to be ridiculed. That's because they wanted to enforce them at gunpoint, if necessary.
