ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast — Cocoa farmers across Ivory Coast went on strike Monday, holding back their crops to protest low retail prices and high export taxes in a move that could affect the global chocolate industry.

The West African country is the world's top grower of cocoa beans, producing 40 per cent of global output each year, according to government statistics, despite being split following a civil war.

Those depression people think poppy seeds are sugar.

That was 'sweet' to them. They didn't have much sugar.

I have to admit I don't understand why they didn't make better use of the maple trees.

Costly? Maple syrup and candy is pretty expensive.

Oh HELL NO!
Don't mess with my chocolate!
Send the Marines to take over the cocoa plantations!
Don't they realize what will happen if the females on this planet can't get chocolate?
Be afraid- be very afraid!

Maple syrup is only expensive because very few people make it now.

90 years ago maple trees could have been a North American sugar cane.

It's still not chocolate.

;)

LOL. Sometimes my son will go out and I'll ask him to bring some chocolate back. "There're treats in the house." he complains, not wanting to spend that big 89 cents on his mom.

"But they aren't chocolate!" I protest. I don't think he gets that nothing takes the place of chocolate when that's what you crave.

For a while I was taking a medication that affected the taste of the 2 things I love most - diet Pepsi and chocolate. I wondered how I could get so many bad sodas and candy until I read online that this was a common side effect. Thank goodness I don't take it anymore.

The good news is ... it's October 16th and Halloween candy has been on sale for almost a month now.

We've had time to buy our Trick or Treat candy "for all the little Trick-or-Treaters" and then replace it 3-4 times! I just hate unwrapping all those tiny snack-size packages, lol.

Think of the poor children who will get Bit-O-Honeys and peanut butter taffy kisses - not to mention those candycorn-like tiny pumpkins or blecch, popcorn balls.

Time to stock pile.... A disruption in the supply of chocolate might lead to all manner of domestic unrest. Demand will increase as less and less chocolate is available. Prices will soar out of control, making chocolate all but inaccessible to the middle class. American women might grudgingly tolerate gasoline price hikes and shortages, but chocolate is a basic life essential not to be mettled with. Even more tragic is the fact the holiday season is fast approaching. The horrors of impending crisis can not be over stated.

I smell a conspiracy, events like this don't just happen. Manipulation of such an indispensable commodity at this strategic moment can not be overlooked. Let us not be naive, yes girls, Carl Rove is behind this strike in a desperate effort to distract the nation's attention from the Foley affair. Who could possibly care about depraved e-mails when one of life's essentials is threatened. One week before the election Bush annouce his plan to deal with the crisis, details of the plan will be somewhat obscure, but he will look like a leader and looks are what counts on election days.

Wait - wait on second thought - its the democrats, that dastardly Soros guy (I think his name has an "h" in it somewhere but couldn't figure out where) In a calculated effort to clinch the midterms, commercials will run in closely contested congressional contest blaming Bush by blasting his in ineffective leadership in maintaining a cheap and abundant supply of a national necessity....yes that's it.....then when the dems take control of the house and senate... the strike will be quickly resolved and chocolate prices and supply will return to normal. Anxiety will cease, nerves will be balmed. Democrats score a magnificent leadership victory for a grateful of 51% of the populace, thus setting them up for a presidential win in '08.

Protesting low retail prices? I'm sorry, but the law of supply & demand will not take a holiday because organized labor throws a temper tantrum.

Not organized labor, the farmers themselves. And the law of supply and demand most assuredly WILL give them what they want.

They want prices to go up. In a capitalist world, there are two ways to achieve this. 1) Increase Demand. 2) Reduce Supply. The first option won't work because chocolate output currently meets demand, and it's hard to get people to love chocolate more than they already do. So they went the second route...slash supplies to drive prices up. So long as they can keep their increased costs BELOW the cost of producing them in a neighboring country, they can increase their income by manipulating output.

That's what the free market is all about. If I have an in demand product and want to make more money from it, there's nothing wrong with cutting production in half and tripling my price to capitalize on it.

We need bipartisian talks and the UN.

Forget it, lets go it alone.
