Guatemala leads Venezuela in U.N. vote
The Mercury News ^ | Oct. 16, 2 | Unattributed

Guatemala topped Venezuela in the first round of voting Monday for a U.N. Security Council seat, but it failed to get the necessary two-thirds majority to win a two-year term on the decision-making body.

Guatemala, whose candidacy had been backed by the United States, received 109 votes, 15 short of the necessary 124 and triggering a second round. Venezuela trailed with 76 votes.

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez had campaigned on the argument that his nation would use its seat on the council to speak out against the United States. The United States and its allies claimed that Venezuela's stance could stymie the council and undermine its credibility.

Diplomats said Chavez may have also hurt his nation's chances with a bombastic speech at the General Assembly debate in September, when he railed against the United States and called President Bush the devil.

We still need to get out of the UN.

If the UN picks Venezuela after listening to this wacko speak, then I take that as an openly hostile vote against the US and we definitely should get out.

Oh, and reclaim their NYC real estate and stop paying dues. Let Caracas provide a building for this farce.

Without our contributions, the organization becomes a totally impotent talk shop.

Cut the dues totally, evict them from NYC and let them go to Caracas. But we should stay in and hold on to our nice pulpit in the Security Council. We could then veto and obstruct the UN for free.

Not only should we get out and quit bankrolling this clown convention, but we should insist they move to another country. Chavez has invited them to move to Caracas, and I'm all for that. Perhaps we should insisit that they move to Caracas and THEN pull out. Can you see all those "diplomats" adjusting to life in Caracas instead of New York? How sweet would that be? The U.N. is nothing more than an anti-American drain on American taxpayers. Get rid of them.

Good! Because if Chavez had gotten a seat...I would be emailing Bush on a daily basis to withdraw from the UN and kick them all out of our country.

"Guatemala leads Venezuela in U.N. vote"

Obviously the members at the U.N. were overwhelmed by his silver tongued oratory when he referred to President Bush as the Devil.

FNC has been in earthquake mode since yesterday. At least it nudged the stuck needle effect of FNC with this idiotic Foley mess, when Foley resigned eons ago.

An op-ed in the Post stated that both will probably fall short...opening the door for the Dominican Republic or some other country.

Either way, it is a rebuke to Chavez should Venezuela fail...He openly campaigned for the seat and promised millions to countries to back him.

I can see all those diplomats enjoying Chavez's hospitality. Food, drinks, sweet oil deals. And I can see the UN budget without one penny from the US.

It did. On the other hand though, if he does get a seat hopefully it will get us that much closer to pulling our funding and sending them packing.

I hope I get to see that entire institution collapse during my lifetime. THAT would be a reason to celebrate!
