A former senior presidential aide has accused the Bush administration of using evangelical Christians to win votes but then privately ridiculing them once in office. The allegations by David Kuo, the former deputy director of the White House office of faith-based initiatives, come at a devastating time, when the administration is counting on born-again Christians to vote in sufficient numbers to save the Republicans' hold on Congress in the November elections.
In a book entitled Tempting Faith: an Inside Story of Political Seduction, to be published on Monday, Mr Kuo portrays the Bush White House's commitment to evangelical causes as little more than a cynical facade designed to win votes.
"National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as ridiculous, out of control, and just plain goofy," Mr Kuo wrote, according to MSNBC television, which obtained an early copy of the book. In particular, he quotes Karl Rove, the president's long-serving political adviser and mentor, as describing evangelical Christians as "nuts".

Well.... IMO, we keep the party conservative.
This time they chose to use a UK news outlet hopefully to draw less suspicion since they have recently flooded US news outlests with their Election season bombs.
If memory serves the people that were apointed to that specific whitehouse office were not Republicans but several liberal democrats.Who ended up quiting amid great liberalpressure todo so --and there were plenty of articles about this on FR.
I repeat that the complaint here had been saved all the way until now three weeks out from November 6th -- Your comments make you appear trollish!
We can expect one more major shoe to be dropped by dems in the next two weeks.
Finally Rove has never claimed to be a born again christin Bush has and has demonstrated his faith to the consternation and abject alarm of liberals -- Bush was elected president not Rove -- I don't recall Rove being VP either.
I recall in one or more aticles posted on FR some complaints were made of Rove saying things about evangleicals and that was some three or more years ago and he has kept his views in this area in check since.
Last I read Rove is entitled to freedom of speach which he regularly exercises
That's stupid.....this a phony story.
I don't think we've seen 10% of the slimy tricks the Dirty 'Rats will pull before the election. The media will of course help them out at every turn.
Perhaps Rove was referring to Kuo himself.
In which case, I can't see how Rove could be wrong.
You aren't very discerning. You have NEVER heard of KUO before yet you are willing to buy his bull story sight unseen....GULLIBLE FREEPER ALERT!!
Oh my bad.........it was her NOT Diane Sawyer. Correction and apologies.
This is more than peddling a book...dollars to doughnuts this guy is in cahoots with the DNC.....
"CBS just helping the dems along in time for the elections."
Yup, it's a full-court press now. They're trying to peel off the Presidents support among Christians. I saw part of the 60 minutes interview, the guy said he doesn't like the way God has been politicized. Basically selling books the easy way, attack President Bush and get lots of free media coverage.
Yup. Getting a bit tiring, isn't it?
Hit piece.

"Snow read from what he called a "very warm letter" Kuo wrote to Bush when he left the White House. Kuo told the president he was proud of what the initiative had accomplished and said "it's your staff's keen awareness of your unwavering support for this initiative that's made the difference.""
It's unbelievable how the Bush administration is being attacked on all fronts. I've never seen anything like it before an election.
No doubt. I don't think I have ever seen them as bad as they are this election, though.
Interesting it's being promoted by the UK's socialist paper, the Guardian, and our socialist cable news outlet, MSNBC.
The White House is staffed with THOUSANDS of people, most of whom get their jobs through networks of contacts. Who is Kuo? Basically a nobody trying to make a name for himself and some money from a book.
Could Rove have described some Evangelical leaders as 'nuts?' Sure, and so would most of us at one time or another. Many just simply are nuts. Same is true of "leaders" of every movement.
Look at the record if you want to see what this president has done for Evangelicals, pro-lifers, pro-constitutionalists, pro-growth, and pro-family interests.
The Evangelicals never had it so good.
Exactly. Where is this hatred for Evangelical demonstrated--by a couple of comments overheard in an office? Man, I have probably insulted Republicans more than some of my democrat friends, especially about the way they haven't hit the dems hard enough over issues like Foley--by that logic I'm a traitor to the party.
Al Jazeera will probably have him next. Will that be enough credibility to his claim?Al Jazeera and the Guardian ..that would be a wall of credibility right there!
Gullible Freeper, or sleeper troll, that is the question?
I'm sure the forgery department at CBS is working on more fake but accurate documents as we post.
