These things make it a lot more difficult to discern who is sane and who isn't. These people often appear to be talking to themselves like other mentally disturbed individuals in the city, until you get close and notice the earpiece. What I've never been able to figure out is how having this thing clipped on your ear allows the microphone to pick up your voice. Doesn't seem feasible, but I guess it works.
I spend about 10 minutes per week on the phone, if that, so I usually find a way to free up my hands for this short period of time.
It does work. I have one, not a Bluetooth or phone, that I use with my laptop to communicate via the Internet. Same deal: earpiece in my ear, with a microphone sticking about an inch forward of the earpiece.
You noticed that also. I often wonder how many mentally disturbed citizens actually buy these devices, just to appear normal in public?
Buy Reynolds!!
"Yeah, man you see guys
walking down the street
pushing shopping carts
and you think they're talking to allah,
they're talking to themself.
Man, no they're talking to ELVIS!
ELVIS! ELVIS!"

I am like you, I maybe make 1-2 calls per week, and may recieve 3-4 calls per week. I actually prefer not being in contact with the outside world 24-7.
You're the first person I've seen who's noticed that. Most people I mention that to haven't noticed it. How do you not notice that these devices are destroying tens of thousands of years of learned human behavior?
I can't stand bluetooth devices specifically because it's now so much harder to figure out who you need to cross the street to avoid. The first time I ran into someone blathering away on a bluetooth device I was literally startled.
These things piss me off to no end.
