New Madrid and Hawai'i are both in the center of plates. Hawai'i is on a magma hotspot, but New Madrid seems to be the equivalent of the plate oil canning up and down. IMHO...

There's an ancient failed rift where the continent began to split and stopped in the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

WE had a 6.5 here on the central coast of CA in 2003....we know how the folks in the 50th state feel right now..nerves on edge...

Lesson learned here for all of us...prepare emergency kits for your homes and one for the cars..you never know when something will hit like this..We took a course a year ago and it was enlightening. There was so much one doesn't think about until it is too late...The Red Cross has tips for this too.

I'm not familiar with Killer Tacos, is it on the waterfront? I've heard the name, but don't think I ever ate there.

As for Safeway, their deli makes incredible sandwiches, I'd rather eat there than some of the vastly overpriced places in Kona. Although Cafe Sibu is fantastic.

Fox just said 6.9

That is humungous. Our Northridge quake in January 1994 was 6.7 and the worst I ever experienced.

Can you explain what you mean by that in layman's terms? My friends and family live right on the epicenter next to the Mississippi.

We have a post and pier house and they say it is actually better for earthquakes than concrete slabs as they can easily crack in an earthquake.

Some awfully expensive homes have been built over on the Kona side in the last while...most or all on slabs.

I'm wondering how they have been affected.

Fox said there's a number of older hotels (50-60 years) that aren't up to current standards. I think they said something about older bridges having been reinforced with steel cables.

Funny. Guy on the Hawaii video link thinks Northridge was 8.5. Could you imagine?

Yes, strangely enough our power never went off even though it seems to have gone off in Oahu and Maui.

Again I don't have the foggiest idea where Fox is getting that number. The USGS twice-reviewed number is M 6.3.

Northridge wasn't strike-slip quake, it was a reverse-thrust quake on a deep, blind fault.

I like the Safeway deli too although they've been running out of some ingredients lately :(

Killer Tacos is not on the Waterfront. Sibu is good.

Huggo's on the water is worth a try. We got for a late lunch (1:30 or so) after the crowd has left so we can get oceanfront seating.

I thought that was the same thing? Kinda like the Tsunami of '04, where the Earth Jolts Up.

I wish someone could come up with an idea for this.
