Son just called. Does anyone know anything?
Thanks to everyone for the links to the live stream
Can earthquake activity trigger volcanic activity?
sometimes it's sign of building volcanic activity
I hit that Safeway all the time too. I stay just up the street from there when I'm there.
I hope no one was killed in this incident.
There once was. Quite the //character// in his day.
That needs no further comment...
I was thinking that if the ground cracked enough from an earthquake it might open up a lava fissure.
I don't know much about it but I do know we're right smack in the fault area. Yikes.
The shake this morning was enough to make us leave the house and step into the yard but so far we didn't feel any violent jolt that would make me think a fissure would have opened up around here. Hoping there are no more aftershocks.
....or tacoed
I knew that it wasn't anything to sneeze at. I wasn't aware that the poster was referring to the earlier reports of the smaller quakes.
I grew up in the New Madrid seismic zone. So I never experienced much quake activity (only one that was actually felt) but the difference is that when we have our big one, the entire nation will notice. I'm glad I'm not there anymore. I wish my loved ones would move away.
Reports now (19:59 UTC) are saying some folks have lost electricity on Oahu and even on Kauai. Seems awfully far away from the earthquake. Anybody know why a 6.5 quake would effect electricity at distances of 400 to 500 km?
So very true! Freepers usually know everything first! I wish I could have a FR pager with Breaking News Alerts for my cell phone!
Hmmmmmmm.......
They just redecorated that Safeway about 6 months ago too. I still don't know if it was the whole ceiling or what.
I know they said some power outages were due to heavy storms in the area. Not sure if thats the explanation.
Whole ceiling that fell I mean.
You still have power? I am praying for you. Please do whatever you need to do to be safe. See about your pets if you have any as well.
I have a vague recollection of reading something about an undersea power cable from Oahu to Kauai.
Now there is an idea!
I have no idea what the State of Hawaii's seismic standards are, but I'd suspect that building materials and construction are very expensive in Hawaii and there would be a temptation to cut corners.
