CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- Miami coach Larry Coker said Sunday that at least eight Hurricane players will be suspended for their role in a sideline-clearing brawl against Florida International.
The fight came in Miami's 35-0 win Saturday night against Florida International, which plays across town. It was the teams' first ever meeting.
Coker said the five players ejected in the third-quarter fight - offensive linemen Derrick Morse and Chris Barney, running back Charlie Jones, and cornerbacks Carlos Armour and Bruce Johnson - would be suspended.
Coker also suspended safeties Anthony Reddick and Brandon Meriweather and fullback James Bryant. The lengths of the suspensions had not been determined.
"I don't have many bad days," Coker said. "This is a bad day."
The fight marred what was supposed to be the beginning of a friendly rivalry between two schools with players who grew up battling each other on high school fields in South Florida.
But even after reviewing tape, it's impossible to say when tensions began escalating.
There were many instances of heated words being exchanged from the game's opening minutes, especially after FIU's Chandler Williams - one of the eight Golden Panthers who'd later be ejected - dived helmet-first at prone Miami defender Kenny Phillips following a first-quarter interception.
But later, unsportsmanlike turned into unruly - or worse.

They have been suspended from going to class.
FIU came out like thugs. They were committing blatant personal fouls from the get go. They were looking to provoke and they got their wish.
There is a post on this already. I just posted on it.
:-)
At least I know where Don Strock is. Haven't heard that name since the '80's.
They're all thugs! http://youtube.com/watch?v=B0oF0TfZB3Y
what ever happened to the police charging thugs with felony assault?
Just saw the brawl on FNC, unbelievable! I agree with you, cancel the season for both schools!
so , the NCAA won't really do what's needed ,...
. . . and Coach Coker suspending some players was predictable
. . . this crap is encouraged , and , sad to say , I remember a time when it was more manly [AND team-focused] to resist being baited into "dumb" retaliation
... big BIG heads have to roll in the athletic programs ,... not just pampered thugs , but I'm dreamin' , right? [this SH*T will continue]
great post river rat,
. . . I remember when "focus" was instilled in all the players of a team
... the offense strived to be a fine tuned machine , MINDFUL OF TIME MANAGEMENT!!! ... the wilder guys were always the defensive genius/whackjobs , trying to knock the offense outta their game
. . . "the End" came slowly and insidiously , by letting all this baiting & posturing , woofin' & dancin' chip away at what real football minds know should be second nature,...
. . . but I'd bet we'll never see that again
Coaches and college presidents have turned a blind eye to the matter for the tv ratings and dollars generated by alumni for the pragmatic view that winning by whatever means necessary is OK.
Will their salaries be docked, too?
You make some good points, Marine and I hope both schools' are finished for the football season. I expect the NC2A to come down like a ton of bricks on this.
Too much $$$$$$ in college football and the NC2A cannot tolerate such barbarism!
Semper Fi,
Kelly
they should lose their scholarships!
In the future, please place articles like these in chat and not the main news forum.
Thanks,

respectfully , THIS IS news ,... it has become part of the pulse of our Nation ,...
. . . and the wrenching decline
[we're not chatting about what oil we use in our Dodge Vipers , y'know]
It's become somewhat typical of major colleges that the football players are students in name only. I remember a story about the Hurricanes from when Jimmy Johnson was head coach. He held a scholarship open for a Dallas Carter player who had been arrested for armed robbery of a liquor store until the player was actually sentenced to jail time.
During the Switzer era, a girl I knew was a grad student at Oklahoma. She told me the first thing she was cautioned about when she got on campus was NOT to ever accept an invitation to go to the football athletic dorms, because you didn't get out without putting out.
Switzer, of course, was fired as OU coach when, on the same weekend, police busted a drug dealing ring in the football dorms, and one football player shot another in a separate incident.
The NCAA will not have any concerns about the current state of affairs until it starts affecting the television contracts and the gate at the games. The only reason they care about the payola to players is because it increases costs of running the program.
I wouldn't cancel the season because that hurts the schools they play who depend on the revenue such games would generate.
However, at the end of the season: Miami gets the death penalty. The school has history of participating in thuggish behavior and they've just struck out. College football is better off without them.
You should have seen the pre-game fight in one of the the Miami - Notre Dame games.
