Friendly advice to a pol/pal: Hang it up, Christy
The Boston Herald ^ | 10/15/2006 | Howie Carr

Christy, it’s time to quit the governor’s race.

Let me be blunt: You are a straw for Deval Patrick. Of course you deny it, but there’s an old saying that the best straw is the one who doesn’t even know he’s a straw.

For anyone unfamiliar with the term, a straw is a candidate in a fight who drains off votes from the main challenger. Basically, a straw splits the anti-vote, so that even if a majority are against a particularly odious candidate, he still slides in. Christy is playing Ross Perot to Deval’s Clinton.

But this campaign is not a referendum on Christy Mihos. It’s about Deval Patrick. There is only one question in this fight.

Are you for Free ’Em All Deval, or are you against him?

Look, Christy, we all like you. You’re a good guy. I’ve had you on my show about a million times; we’ve been to each other’s houses; we’ve gone out to dinner together; one of my best friends is on your campaign payroll.

But the fact remains, your continuing presence in the race is only helping one person, and his name is not Joe Sixpack.

You’ve admitted that you would vote for Deval if you weren’t running. Before the primary, on NECN, Jim Braude asked you flat-out who you would pull the lever for if you couldn’t vote for yourself.

Kerry Healey (RINO), Republican Nominee.

Deval Patrick, Democrat Nominee.

Christy Mihos, Liberal Independent Candidate (though takes votes from the Liberal Republican).

I think Mihos knows what he's doing. Mass. has not had a Democrat as governor in 15 years. Mihos plans to change that.

Why does anybody invite Mihos to the debates? That is the problem.

I see that Gary Studds(the congressman that put the S in sodomy)won't be coming down for breakfast.

Did anybody have him in the pool?

Patrick probably insists on it. And the four people invited to this year's debates is better than the five people, including crank candidate Barbara Johnson, who debated in 2002.

>>Christy, my callers are starting to blame me for your campaign, saying I created you.

So Howie may be the Larry King ("c'mon Ross, you should run...") of Mihos? (And we remember what we got when Perot ran in '92).

BTW I think the "speaking truth to power" slogan is right out of JOHN KERRY's playbook

>>Kerry Healey

her positions on gay marriage and abortion prob. give her the RINO label but I'd rather have her there to counterbalance
the Dems (or at least use a "bully pulpit" to go right to the people) than a Dem like Patrick. Better the devil you know
than the Deval you don't (or, actually we're starting to get to know Deval and we don't like what we see)

And as soon as we mention that Patrick does things like try to free a rapist (and several other criminals), the liberals
immediately play The Race Card: Oh! You're just saying this because he's black.

No way...if KMH were a black woman and DP a white man
I'd still go for KMH based on her positions. (Plus she..
lives down the street from me here in Beverly :) )

speaking of the race card: If Patrick were a Republican he'd prob have libs throwing Oreo cookies at him. Just ask
Michael Steele of MD:

>>Black Democratic leaders in Maryland say that racially tinged attacks against Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele in his bid for the U.S. Senate are fair because he is a conservative Republican. Such attacks against the first black man to win a statewide election in Maryland include pelting him with Oreo cookies during a campaign appearance, calling him an "Uncle Tom" and depicting him as a black-faced minstrel on a liberal Web log.

Made me curious so I did a search and found ...

http://www2.gol.com/users/quakers/living_the_truth.htm

The phrase "speaking truth to power" goes back to 1955, when the American Friends Service Committee published Speak Truth to Power, a pamphlet ii at proposed a new approach to the Cold War. Its title, which came to Friend Milton Mayer toward the end of the week in summer 1954 when the composing committee finished work on the document, has become almost a cliche; it has become common far beyond Quaker circles, often used by people who have no idea of its origins. (One current example: Anita Hill entitled her memoir of her sensational charges of sexual harassment against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, Speaking Truth to Power.)

>>Barbara Johnson

Smoker-voiced ind. candidate who once said on WBZ "(Shannon)
O'Brien and (Mitt) Romney are nice people, but they both have their heads up their butts, excuse my French". Once, while on the old "VB's Pleasure Pit" show on WRKO, VB got her to say (at his urging) "Oh VB you're such a dillhole..."

She ran on a court reform platform among other things. Her website says, I kid you not, "BJ for Governor" at the top...
something that must have happened more than a few times
in Arkansas pre-1992... :)

between Lurch and Kerry Healey...)

"speaking truth to power"

I think this is one of those nonsensical and meaningless phrases you hear from time to time. How many people actually USE this phrase when talking to somebody else ? What does it really even mean ? Of course, it's not nearly as silly as the phrase "special interests."

"And sometimes loving your country demands you must tell the truth to power. This is one of those times."
--John Kerry, 4/22/06

Mihos borrowing J F'n Kerry-used expression (though yes I guess it does go back awhile)

Thanks Howie for sying what needed to be said in public!

I've been emailing Christy's campaign on a regular basis saying pretty much the same things.

We made this guy's fortune by buying his sodas, smokes and lottery tickets and overpaying for bread and milk, and in return, he's going to stab us in the back by knowingly sticking us with a guy who will destroy what little is left in this State.

What does Christy care? He sold the stores and is sitting on a mountain of cash. He'll be headed South along with all the other former MA residents who can afford to get out before the apocalypse.

The name "Christy" used to invoke thoughts of a successful entrepreneur and a guy who fought against the corrupt insanity of our State government. By the time this is all over, it will invoke thoughts of a guy who sold us down the river to satisfy his own need for revenge.

The real problem here is that Romney left the entire state in the lurch by his cutting and running from a 2nd term. Leaving the state to a hapless Lieutenant to carry the banner (when she herself couldn't even win a State Rep seat in your bailiwick of Beverly) is reprehensible. As awful as Jane Swift was, at least she could win her own legislative district in Western Mass.

Of course, at least the latter phrase makes sense. Every mother tells their child to just give peas a chance. :-)
