Residents in Western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore say there are many whites among them who will not vote for a black candidate, such as Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
"Here in rural parts of the state, race might be an issue. It shouldn't, but it might," Greg Slick, a physical education teacher at North Hagerstown High School, said at a recent Friday night varsity football game. "They are not openly going to say it."
Mr. Slick, 52, a registered Republican who is white, said he will vote for Mr. Steele. But he added that the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is not based in nearby Sharpsburg by accident, despite public outcry every summer over the group's annual rally at Antietam National Battlefield.
"Someone is drawing them here," he said.
David Marshall, 54, a white waterman from Crisfield on the Eastern Shore, said he is sure some of the people he works with will vote against Mr. Steele because of his skin color.
However, he said he and his friends will vote for Mr. Steele, regardless of his race.

Dear Salamander,
A Republican who is... pro-developer???
The horrors!!
;-)
Sorry - for me that's actually a point in his favor.
As for slots, he RAN on slots in 2002. If folks now oppose him because he's pushing slots, but backed him in 2002, then they weren't paying attention.

Seems to me polls frequently have Dems about five % higher than they perform in the election anyway.
$$$$$$
I automatically add/subtract the five points when I hear poll reports.
Also Clinton has a pretty good track record of flying in to rallies for dems who proceed to lose their races. He is coming to Maryland next week for O'Malley. Let us hope xlinton's track record continues.
Dear CharlesWayneCT,
"Steele WON the Lt. Governor's race with Erlich. So apparently the GOP was able to get enough of it's voters out to vote for a ticket with an African-American on it."
That's true! The question is whether Mr. Steele will do as well now that he's on his own ticket. I certainly hope so.
"If anything, this might be some local GOP guys thinking to shame people into voting for Steele to prove they are not racists."
I hope it works! There's lots of guilty white liberal trash out in Montgomery County, and we could use a few of those votes.

The left's worst nightmare is for a Black Republican to win.
I think this story smells like something that died last year.
"How does that falsify the fact that Mr. Steele may lose votes due to racism?"
Please disregard this article.
North Hagerstown High School is where the kids of rich Fountainhead liberals learn their progressive drivel alongside the "street" black kids from the poorer areas downtown *north* of Franklin Street.
The teachers are 99% liberals.
The august and wizened GYM TEACHER was merely, accidentally projecting his own prejudices.
[there are -not- a lot of black people in the "real" North End]
Dear Salamander,
"Ehrlich keeps bragging on funding "stem cell research".
Is *that* supposed to fire up the conservative base?
Hell no...he's pandering to the death-cult Dems, instead.
"I won't vote for him."
I understand entirely. I don't blame you. I haven't fully made up my own mind, yet. But I'm leaning to pulling the lever for Mr. Ehrlich, again. "Gov. O'Malley" gives me nightmares.

I am confused. I thought racism was only present in Southern states, populated entirely by rednecks. I thought the Northeast was liberal and enlightened.
I hope you're right.
Dear Zack Nguyen,
Maryland is south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Was it? In any case, as a Texan I would not consider Maryland to be a southern state. Sorry if that offends anyone. I barely consider Norther Virginia to be southern.
If Steele takes a tough stand on immigration, I think it would help him on the Shore. Locals are tired of being killed by illegal drunk drivers, poorer locals are tired of manual labor jobs being taken by illegals (my uncle has a nursery and sees the Guatamalan landscaping crews all the time), and the whole seafood processing industry which used to hire a large number of blacks is rife with illegals picking crabs, shucking oysters, etc...
Parts of the Eastern Shore as somewhat like tidewater Virginia, and western Md might be considered southern in a piedmont, shenandoah fashion. But the biggest, most populous part of the state, the Montgomery, Howard, PG, counties, and Baltimore is a blue as it gets.
PS: Although born in MD, I'm in NM now, so don't make me come over there! ;-D
As long as a person of Jewish faith does not endorse supporting Israel, the anti-Israel folks will vote for him. But then that means the Jewish person has to repudiate any thoughts or feelings he has for the continued existence of a Jewish state in the middle east.
Oh, and remember that Michael Douglas is not Black, but he is, to use the Democratic vernacular, an "Oreo"
LOL. Yes, the problem is that, at bottom, it is a blue state. Steele was facing an uphill battle as is.
Zack,
Maryland may look like the northeast to a Texan, but it is southern state in its "sensibilities."
And do you have a death wish for your income and business growth here in Maryland. Re-electing Gov Erhlich is the best thing we can do to show the Dems that their folks in the state legislature are truly left-wing communists, and I don't consider those two terms redundant.
Fine.
Let him put a couple thousand tract McMansions which drive the locals into poverty and bankruptcy because they can't afford to pay the "new" property values in -your- backyard.
People out here are -poor- but our land is valuable.
We are but inconvenient obstacles blocking the acquisition of vast resources.
We are undergoing a rural cleansing and we're not happy.
You have not read the "opinions" of the newcomers in the local rag.
They want all of us "hicks and hillbillies" GONE and the sooner the better.
Now, how would you feel in our shoes?
He may have "ran on slots" in some places but in western MD he stumped on a "pro-gun/hunting" stance.
What a joke that turned out to be.
[and most people out here in 2002 did *not* have internet access to assess his plank...only what they heard from his lips]
Well I hope so. I may have to move up there soon.
