Rural areas' racism may cost Steele votes
Washington Times ^ | October 14, 2006 | S.A. Miller

Residents in Western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore say there are many whites among them who will not vote for a black candidate, such as Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, who is running for the U.S. Senate.

"Here in rural parts of the state, race might be an issue. It shouldn't, but it might," Greg Slick, a physical education teacher at North Hagerstown High School, said at a recent Friday night varsity football game. "They are not openly going to say it."

Mr. Slick, 52, a registered Republican who is white, said he will vote for Mr. Steele. But he added that the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is not based in nearby Sharpsburg by accident, despite public outcry every summer over the group's annual rally at Antietam National Battlefield.

"Someone is drawing them here," he said.

David Marshall, 54, a white waterman from Crisfield on the Eastern Shore, said he is sure some of the people he works with will vote against Mr. Steele because of his skin color.

However, he said he and his friends will vote for Mr. Steele, regardless of his race.

BTW - Calvert Co is overwhelmingly Republican, perhaps one of the most 'red' in the state.

"Benjamin Cardin" is a quite recognizable Jewish-sounding name. People understand that, particularly if they are racists who have their antennae up for anyone who might not be unalloyed WASP.

I'm sorry to say I know people like that. I know educated, successful Republicans who call someone "that Jew" and ascribe every flaw to him if he has a Jewish grandparent. It's appalling. One usually hears racism from Democrats and I don't expect it from our team.

These anti-Steele voters are incredibly stupid.

Thee may be some of this -- but how many blacks who would normally vote Demo will refuse to vote against a black man and will stay home?

The story has too many "my friends will vote for him but I suspect others (who I don't actually know) won't" that it smells like a hit piece.

Well, no one is going to say to a reporter I'm not voting for a black guy, they will put it on a "friend". That's why polling is difficult when it comes to black or other minority candidates. You won't be able to see if there is a racial effect on the votes until after election day, when they report the election numbers by county and presceint and compare Ehrlich's numbers to Steele's in a given area.

Of course, Steele will also almost assuredly benefit from racial bias in voting- there will be those who vote for him because he is a black guy running for the Senate.

Dear posterchild,

The anecdotes of this story seem, so far, to be borne out by the polling data available.

I figure there will be at least one white person in the state of Maryland who will vote against Mr. Steele because he's black.

I don't know how many will join that person.

I hope it's exceedingly few. If it is, I believe that Mr. Steele will be the next United States Senator from Maryland.

But right now, I have all my fingers crossed.

Dear expatpat,

Remember, for a Republican, it's tough to get elected statewide in Maryland.

Mr. Steele is running well in the black community, which seemingly would guarantee his election. However, substantial loss of white votes could more than counter his gains.

With all the anti Jewish sentiment among the elitist Democrat power makers like the Move On dirtbags, you'd think Cardin wouldn't have a chance.

Agreed that such polling is fraught with problems. I also don't deny that there will be bias as there is in any political contest. I just don't expect it to be significant enough to sway the race nor enough to bother writing an article about it.

The testimonies remind me of when Rush talks about people talking about the economy. 'I have a job ... but I'm worried about my neighbor.'

This is utter crap.

I'm not hearing a peep out of anybody about this and I hang out with "hillbillies and rednecks" as a rule.

Even people who despise Ehrlich like Steele.

I fully intend to vote for Steele...but not Ehrlich.

This peckerwood is probably basing his "belief" on the "strange disappearance" of all Mfumes campaign signs out here.

We don't 'hate blacks'.
We hate ~scum~.

His reference to the "KKK meetings" is hilarious.
5 or 6 pitiful, deluded schmucks show up and that's a "Klan rally".
[and I'll bet money that the KKK-ers are all "old time" Dems under those sheets]

Steele doesn't have to worry about western MD Republicans but he better wonder about the western MD -Dems-.
They *are* racists.

Watch the Allegany county returns on election night.

They always go overwhelmingly Dem [Frostburg/college town] and figure out *who* is "racist".

Dear Salamander,

"This is utter crap."

I hope you're right!

Nonetheless, Mr. Steele's polling among whites isn't what Republicans usually get.

Frankly, I don't see the problem with white Republicans, but rather with white conservative Democrats who often vote Republican.

We'll see.

I checked for this article, and didn't find it. If it's a duplicate, my apologies in advance.

I've posted a few articles where I get an "ABP" and find that I didn't enter some metaphysically conjured-up or extremely strange keyword. Rest easy, my friend.

That's a good point. There is a lot of people in that catagory (registered Dems who have voted mostly Rep) in MD. This is a traditionally Democratic state, and old habits die hard. I would assume that most registered Republicans in MD are fairly loyal and will certainly vote for the Republican candidate regardless of race.

You aren't voting for a Republican governor? Why? Do you prefer that Martin O'Malley be elected governor? He can do great damage. . .and holding the governorship of Maryland for a few terms is a step in his ultimate plan to become president.

I know Martin O'Malley. He's a vicious, puerile person in the mold of the Kennedys and shouldn't be mayor of Baltimore, much less governor of Maryland. Whatever disagreements you may have with Ehrlich, he's better than O'Malley.

There will always be a few people on both ends of the bell curve, but I don't expect them to have any impact. I also agree (hope) that Mr. Steele will become Senator Steele.
(Don't currently live (or vote) in MD but watch the race as I once lived there and it's one of the 5 states I still consider a 'homeland.')
