Former Massachsuetts Congressman Gerry Studds has died.
The 69-year-old Studds died this morning at Boston Univesrity Medical Center.
He'd been hospitalized after sustaining head injuries from an accident while walking his dog.
Studds was a ranking member of the House Democratic leadership and advocated for New England fishermen and the ocean environment.
studds, who grew up in Cohasset, was the first openly gay person elected to Congress. He served from 1973 to 1997.
He is survived by his husband, Dean Hara. the couple was among the first same sex couples to be legally married in Massachusetts.
Good question !
I never heard/knew about Congressman Studds(D), until the Foley incident happen.
The same people who are making Hastert's life a living hell would call you a "homophobe" or "hatemonger" if you oppposed naming the pages' dorm after Studds.
They would sue you if you were the Boy Scouts of America and had a rule against gay scoutmasters.
If three years ago Hastert has initiated a serious probe after hearing about the "overly friendly emails (not the IMs)" there would have been a firestorm of outrage about the GOP having a gay witch hunt.
I'm betting it was a cock-a-poo. It got off it's leash and took off after Studd's gerbil...Poor guy didn't have a chance after that.
An opportunity for another Welstone moment for the Dems. Do you think they will bite? Ok, wrong metaphore. :)
What's rather ironic is that Chris Wallace referred to Studds as having passed away ,last weekend. He later came back and corrected his mistake.
Do you live here? It's a good source of news if you filter out for the agenda. I skip the op-eds because I already know what they're going to say. I also don't bother with their coverage of the governor's race.
The Herald doesn't cover transit, business, and town politics as well for my taste.

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
The dog knocked him down and was humping his bleeding body?
Or maybe ol' Gerry was just crumpled with shame at recent reawakenings of memory and the great mischief he had visited upon the US Congress, his party, his district and himself, and injured himself in the fall.
Despair can do that to people, you know.
Perhaps it was common knowledge that Studds was ill. Also meaning his cause of death stated here is a lie
Another interesting mayhaps convoluted question....
Will "the grieving widower" be entitled to survivor payments and bennies (at taxpayers expense!)...
....As would normally be payable to a surviving spouse for life??
Studds was moderately big news back in 83 when he was censured by the House(and Studds turned his back during the censure vote and was applauded by the democrats) for his taking advantage of a page.
I guess we will have to wait for Greta or Nancy to get the doggy details.
So, that made Gerry Dean's wife and Dean is now a widower.
THUS he gets top glom onto Studd's Congressional pension. Minimum $100,000/year I'll bet
Reply: NOPE, my friend, which is the only good news related to this story. Just because Studds and His husband (yuk) were legally married in Taxachusetts, the federal government does not pay pensions to partners, life mates, ship mates or neighbors. Studds Stud is screwed!
lol
Just the opposite, IMHO.
After the person dies, the gloves come off.
Nothing became him in life like his leaving it...
The article is written with the most perverted canonizing possible...
He is survived by his husband.....
That's just sick.
You are surrounded by goodness - you're safe.
As I continued reading, I saw you were already here. Pinged you thinking how this 'dog' news fit in with other thread.
