Holt Debate Viewing Tonight on AETN
AETN ^ | 10/12/06 | me

Senator Holt and Bill Halter debated today from 1:00 to 2:00. It was recorded and will be aired on AETN tonight at 8:00pm Central Time, Channel 2 in North Little Rock.

The debate included about 50 audience members that could not ask questions, make any noise, use video, or flash photography. Each candidate was allowed 10 "picketers" from their campaign. 30 seats were open to the public. The UCA Young Democrats claimed they were going to stuff the remaining 30 seats with dem supporters, but they only had about a dozen supporters there. There were were more Holt supporters in the waiting room that showed a live broadcast.

My View:

Holt's main point was that he has fought for conservative values when it was unpopular and that Halter is an out-of-state liberal bought and paid for by liberal special interest groups. Halter claimed that Holt is out of "the mainstream" since he often being the single vote on things like pay raises for politicians and government programs.

My favorite moment was Holt's closing where he reminded the audience that the issues that he supported in the past (reforming illegal immigration, eliminating the food tax, against gay marriage, etc.) are now used as taking points by both parties. He also mentioned that Halter was the board member that distributed internet gambling and porn.

Halter was part of Bill Clinton's Social Security Program and had lived in California for several years. There are 4 years of Halter's career that nobody knows where he was.

Our wonderful view of the debaters. The camera in the way was to view the Moderator.

The audience, almost all Holt Supporters. A few came in later.

The newest member of the Holt Family who has already been to more debates than me.

Most agree that Holt started off a little ackward but finished great in the end. I was most impressed by the amount of support conservatives were able to muster in such a short time. Almost all the Holt Supporters had not heard about the debate until the night before. The support for Halter was pathetic.

I surely hope that the AR GOP does not get completely shut out of all the statewide elections this year. Unfortunately, Huckabee stayed a term too long, and the state party has begun to calcify on his watch after banner growth in the '90s. After Asa Hutchinson for Governor, getting Sen. Jim Holt elected as Lt Gov and Gunner DeLay as Attorney-General are our top priorities.
