Sounds like insubordination at a minimum. Soldiers should shut up and soldier.

"We need to face up to the Islamist threat, to those who act in the name of Islam and in a perverted way try to impose Islam by force on societies that do not wish it."

...And bailing out is facing up to a threat? Makes no sense.

"Our society has always been embedded in Christian values; once you have pulled the anchor up there is a danger that our society moves with the prevailing wind."

He's certainly right on this point.

But for this "Withdrawal" Syndrome....I'm sorry General, but--knowing how the Jihadists work--they'll only get Bolder to Attack & Undermine the United Kingdom.

If security in Iraq is to be increased...the entire Coalition has got to go on the Offensive aggain...against Iran & Syria.

Either the Archbishop needs the Army to get the muzzies to take up the slack from the financial loss of parishioners in E(piscopal)C(church)USA or this murtha's been emailing this guy?

He is saying we are not wanted there. So maybe we should let them slaughter each other if that's what they want?

I thought his domestic comments were very interesting. Sky News has so far ignored them and focussed on the call for withdrawal.

They are speculating that he might be fired.

That I can agree with. The coalition should tell the Iraqis that we'll be back in 6 months... good luck to ya!

MacArthur and Truman redux. But at least MacArthur had the right idea.

"We are in a Muslim country and Muslims' views of foreigners in their country are quite clear."

Large sections of the UK are now a Muslim country where foreigners - i.e. Englishmen - are not wanted either.

He should be fired for his domestic comments as well.

Do not take this out of proportion. It is not the number of Muslims in the country that is the problem - there is no more Muslims in proportion to the rest of the population than in the USA - it is the fact they are all in roughly the same place.

On a pedantic point, an Englishman would be a foreigner on about a third to a half of the geographical area of the UK anyway, Muslims or not! :)

Because it's outside his job description. I believe he's saying that fighting in Iraq is giving moslems a reason to undermine British values at home. in other words he is blaming Iraq for the misbehavior of the Islamists. His basic premise is that all of this means they should get out of Iraq and that seems incredibly unhelpful to the mission. What are the soldiers fighting for if he declares the cause lost?

Alright. Thanks for the answer.

I agree that it is not his place to go public with such worries.

That said, I increasingly share his consern that the war being conducted abroad is leading to increased appeasment at home.

Off course, it doesnt have to be that way. It ought to be perfectly possible to be equally strong at home and abroad.

Cheers.

I am not English (never presume every Briton is English), but to answer your question, the people of Britain like a strong Army leadership. They trust the Army completely and as it is not like other countries where they are scared of a coup, they like them to protect the Army from the whims of the Politicians.
