Daley: By 2016, cameras on 'almost every block'

Security and terrorism won't be an issue if Chicago wins the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games because, by that time, there'll be a surveillance camera on every corner, Mayor Daley said Wednesday. "By the time 2016 [rolls around], we'll have more cameras than Washington, D.C. ... Our technology is more advanced than any other city in the world -- even compared to London -- dealing with our cameras and the sophistication of cameras and retro-fitting all the cameras downtown in new buildings, doing the CTA cameras," Daley said.

"By 2016, I'll make you a bet. We'll have [cameras on] almost every block."

That's exactly what Mayor Richard J. Daley said back in the late 60s-early 70s when extensive police surveillance by the Red Squad was revealed: "If they're not doing anything wrong, why should they care if a hundred policemen investigate them? I ought to know, they've been investigating me for 30 or 40 years."

Much of the Red Squad surveillance and activity was later determined to be illegal, and it was disbanded. Junior officers were scapegoated; Daley and other supervisors escaped blame.

How many hundreds of millions of dollars in equipment and government/law enforcement employees can be circumvented by a $2.00 pair of nose glasses from any novelty shop?

notice how the S.O.B brags about how Marxist Leninist he is and how much his poll numbers go up after he does. Karl Marx would be proud.Chicago and all of northern Illinois is a lost cause as far as American democracy is concerned. I think they should be forcibly succeeded from the union or the disease will spread and by 2016 there will be a camera on every corner in America as well as 2 in every house

"Cameras on every block"? Gee, I feel safer already.

Didn't you hear about Chicago's advanced cameras - if somebody attacks you, those cameras are so advanced, they come down off the poles and arrest the attacker on the spot!!

Unfortunately the federal government is handing out money like it's candy, to any citys/states that can justify this type of stuff. You can bet the cities/states wouldn't be doing this if they were paying for it 100%.

was at the Athens 2004 games. It really was not such an uncomforable issue. remember if you are in WashDC now they pretty much have everyone under face recognition cameras. I think the issue becomes a problem when civil uses are made for these when criminal uses is the intent. IOW some divorce lawyer subpoenas ALL the records of where you were.

Oh, wow! I've always wanted to visit Greece! Yes, I see your point. And frankly, having security at the Olympics (as I've had more time to ponder it) is never a bad thing. But I think Daley see this as a good opportunity to push more Big Brother on his kingdom. Not that the gun control has helped crime. Good point - civil uses. That is really the issue. I look to place in UK that have such surveillance. And guns are highly controlled. A lot of big brother, and a lot of crime. And a lot of intrusion.

We are going to need some form of "Mind your own business" legislation to keep such temptations away from people.
