Abe, "Continued nuclear development of N. Korea could lead to its collapse"

On Oct. 11, Abe Shinzo, the new Japanese Prime Minister, gave his opinion that continued nuclear development of N. Korea could lead to its collapse.

Prime Minister Abe attended the Budget Committee of Upper House, and made comments regarding N. Korea's nuclear test, "If (N. Korea) develops nuclear weapons, it would put the survival of N. Korea in serious condition," according to Japanese media.

It is the first time that Prime Minster Abe, a well-known hard-liner against N. Korea, mentioned the possibility of N. Korea's collapse at Japan's legislature after his inauguration.

He added, "It is an illusion to think that nuclear weapons will garner international attention and enable N. Korea to negotiate U.S. What N. Korean regime should concentrate on is not to make nuclear weapons but to raise the standard of living for its people."

Japanese government convened its national security conference and adopted its own sanctions, made up of three items, banning all N. Korean ships from entering Japan, banning import of all N. Korean products, and ban, in principle, of all people with N. Korean citizenship.

I hear that Abe is hard-nosed.

Finally, the liberal Japanese and S. Koreans are getting to see what GW's approach is right and that taking a hardline stance against DPRK is the wise course of action.

How I wish American liberals see the same and smell the coffee......

One would think, it changes the North Korean math for retribution against Seoul just a bit, if an attack comes from Tokyo...

The Japanese are worried about strikes directed at THEM. Not much love for the Japanese anywhere in Korea.

Yes but NK doesn't have 5,000 artillary pieces aimed at Tokyo.

If Tokyo were to somehow pinpoint strike Kim directly, in effect toppling his government - NK would do what?

Attack Seoul?

Would NK keep fighting, without Kim?

I am asking these questions honestly, I'm not familiar enough with Korea to know.

North Korea recently tested rockets capable of hitting Tokoyo. Whether they have enough to make it worthwhile provoking Japan, which has a very large and capable "defence: force, Is naother matter. Don't know.

I vote we assign NK to Japan. We've got Islam, it's the least they can do.

They may lose a war now and then, but they can be a force to be reckoned with. We learned this in WWII. We won the war, but at what cost …

When the Japanese set their mind to something, it takes a great deal of force to deter them. And they are willing to sacrifice all for the sanctity of their country.

Japan is only a few hours away from having nuclear weapons … Supplied from our off shore aircraft carriers do doubt.

Japan doesn't need our nukes they could build their own in months. And the rockets they use to launch satellites could put them anyplace in the world they felt like. They also have some 1st class diesel boats that would give them second strike capability second only to our SSBNs.

If not for the Nukes the Japanese would make short work of NK. And if NK ever used their nukes on Japan they have to believe that they wouldn't live long afterwords, regardless of what the US, SK or anyone else does.

Thats why this whole thing confuses me. I can't figure out why China let Kim set of his fire cracker. There is no up side for either China or NK. We already knew The Dear Chia Leader had the bomb and were acting accordingly. If it had gone off perfectly it would not have changed the situation. The fact that it was a dud only hurts him.

And by setting it off he might force Japan and SK to start taking their defense seriously. Fact is if Japan decides to spend more than 1% of GNP on defense, goes nuclear or both then all of China's plans for dominating the Pacific go right out the window. The JMSDF can take on the PLAN with a good chance of victory as things stand now. And that is with China going all out and Japan building a few ships a year. And that doesn't even bring the USN, RAN or Taiwan.

Only thing NK is doing is making the re-arming of Japan a reality. I think President Bush and Secretary Rice should be making lots of noises that the United States will have no issue should the Japanese decide to amend their Constitution and reconstitute their military to defend their country and interests against NK's aggression. Let's see how fast the Chicoms act to shut down Pajama Boy's little show.
