HARTFORD, Conn. --Republican Rep. Christopher Shays defended the House speaker's handling of a congressional page scandal, saying no one died like at Chappaquiddick in 1969 when Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy was involved.
"I know the speaker didn't go over a bridge and leave a young person in the water, and then have a press conference the next day," the embattled Connecticut congressman told The Hartford Courant in remarks published Wednesday.
"Dennis Hastert didn't kill anybody," he added.
Shays' comments recalled the Chappaquiddick incident, when Kennedy's car ran off a Massachusetts bridge, killing his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne. Kennedy did not immediately report the tragedy, and later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.
Last week, Kennedy campaigned for Democrat Diane Farrell, who is locked in a bitter fight with Shays that could help determine whether Democrats recapture the House after 12 years of GOP control.
"This is symptomatic of Chris losing his composure in a tight race," Farrell said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press Wednesday. "Chris just seems to be lashing out in anger."
Kennedy's office had a terse response.

Attaboy, Shays! We need to hear this more often. Kind of puts things in perspective.
True, but it permanently squashed any chance he'd run for the presidency. As I remember, he was a hot ticket and all the media could talk about at the time was how it ruined his chance to be president. They fretted more about that than the tragic death of a young woman.
Me too. I think it's the only thing he's ever said that I agree with.
Can't waste ice on a bruise, he needs it for his booze.
I talked to a kool-aid drinker once about the Kennedys. He of course said there were some serious Republican operatives that didn't ever want any Kennedy to be president, so that is why we had two assinations. He said that it would be too suspicious to kill Teddy, so they, (the assassins) framed him for Chappaquidick. He truly believed that someone else drove the car, that Kennedy didn't know the girl was in the car, etc., that it was all a frame up so Teddy would never be president. He also said that John John's plane was shot down by these same people.
Kennedy's office had a terse response... "I'm not going to dignify such a desperate attack with a response,"
Mary Jo Koepkne is still DEAD and you were the cause; you can't change the facts whether you respond to them or not.
Rep. Christopher Shays sure as hell has grown a pair of beachballs. Maybe he can pass the formula onto the rest of the castrated republican party.
"....when Kennedy's car ran off a Massachusetts bridge,..."

That right you conservatives, the car ran off the bridge, got it?
Kennedy did NOT drive the car off the bridge (in a drunken haze).
I notice you oriented it properly to display the bar sinister. Nice touch.
Perhaps Semter in some language means Macaca.
I would almost bet it does. LMAO
You're kidding I hope. There have been 2 black Supreme Court Justices and Byrd voted against them both (one was a liberal and the other conservative).
He used the "N" word on national TV just 3 years ago.
You said it really well.
Yes, I didn't think I needed the sarcasm tag.
I wish more Republican's would speak out like this. At least Shay's comments made the MSM... the namby-pamby stuff doesn't get reported -- could be one reason we always here the DNC soundbites, they are king of outrageous comments.
LOL
Further, the dead girl did not die in the wreck: She died because she was left to suffocate in the small airpocket left in the car. IF the POS had jumped in to get her out, she would have lived. Ironically, if he had gotten her out, this could have all been covered up, and teddybare might have become (GAAAAAACK!) president.
The Lord works.
Kennedy's office had a terse response.
"This just makes clear the real need for change in November, beyond that I'm not going to dignify such a desperate attack with a response," said Kennedy spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner."
Shays should say he isn't anywhere as desperate as Mary Jo must have been, conserving her breath in an air pocket thinking Teddy would walk 100 yards to the nearby house and call for help.
What do you think a US Congressman making public Liberal threats to his life for telling the truth, would do to those dim hopes for power?
Today is unlike any other time in politics. The dims, through years of attack politics, have changed the electorate... and they are finding out that they don't like it very much.
LLS
How unbelievably sad. The last minutes of Marys life must have been absolutely horrible.
