Yankee Cory Lidle on NYC plane; 2 killed

NEW YORK - A small plane with New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle aboard crashed into a high-rise condominium tower Wednesday on the Upper East Side, killing at least two people and raining flaming debris on the sidewalks below, authorities said.

The New York City medical examiner's office now says two people have died in the plane crash, not four as the office had previously reported.

There was no immediate confirmation Lidle was among the dead, although a federal law enforcement official said Lidle's passport was found on the street beneath the crash site.

A law enforcement official in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lidle was on the plane. And Federal Aviation Administration records showed the single-engine plane was registered to the athlete.

There was no word yet on injuries linked to the crash on an overcast October afternoon, which sent thick black smoke soaring above the city skyline and flames shooting out of apartments above the tony neighborhood.

On Sunday, the day after the Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs, Lidle cleaned out his locker at Yankee Stadium and talked about his interest in flying. He explained to reporters the process of getting a pilot's license, and said he intended to fly back to California in several days and planned to make a few stops.

Lidle, 34, a nine-year major league veteran, came to the Yankees from the Philadelphia Phillies in a late-season trade. The journeyman pitched for seven teams during a career in compiling an 82-78 lifetime record.

Won't get this kitty into a small private aeroplane, no siree, I'd rather walk ten miles to a Dixie Streisands concert!

I only get into general aviation aircraft as the PILOT.
That is one way I make sure the right decisions have been made pre-flight.

As long as you are not rich and famous, you are fairly safe in small private aircraft.

It's been posted a bunch already, but as the evening crew comes on, it may not hurt to repost it.

It's a crying shame, and just one of those weird accidents that happen in life, IMHO.

What's the fun of flying if you can't fly over (and through!!) NYC?

Lidle pitched for the A's awhile back, if I'm not mistaken. Prayers for his family, he will be missed.

You are the first. Good observation! Interesting, probably not significant though.

Yeah, it's 90 - 11 - 01.

Close, but no cigar.

90/11/01, not 09/11/01. No significance. BTW, this was pointed out on the breaking news thread about the plane crash.

Prayers to friends and family of Cory Lidle and the other casualty.

I've long considered learning to fly, but have decided that it would not be a healthy move for me. To give but one example, if I'm driving my car and I start to hear a strange noise coming from it, my general inclination is to turn up the radio volume so that I don't hear the noise anymore. Can't get away with that in a plane...

Sure cant.
But aircraft engines are very reliable.

But I have opted not to fly when I did not like the way an engine was running during my pre-flight checks.

I recommend taking a few lessons. It is such an amazing thing to do.

There is a picture going around of Alec Baldwin trying to get past the place tape at the crash scene. He looks PO'ed that someone would want him to obey the law at a crash scene. I won't steal the pic, but instapundit.com has the link.
