CHICAGO (AP) -- Governor Rod Blagojevich and Republican challenger Judy Baar Topinka clashed over a long list of familiar topics today, including gun control and ethics.
The two went after each other after appearing before the Chicago Tribune's editorial board in an effort to win the newspaper's endorsement.
Blagojevich again criticized Topinka for opposing an assault weapons ban, calling her stance "mind boggling."
She accused Blagojevich of not fully divulging information about a 15-hundred-dollar gift one of his daughters received from a long-time friend whose wife got a state job.
Blagojevich maintains there's nothing improper about the gift.
The two spoke to reporters after their meeting at the newspaper, which was closed to outside media.
Green Party candidate Rich Whitney says he wasn't invited.

Considering Blagoevich's good friend and top fundraiser was Federall Indicted today , I do not think Ethics is a good issue for the Gov.
sorry

And Topinka is the only George Ryan stooge who hasn't been indicted. Man Illinois knows how to pick them. The fact that Topinka is against the assault weapons ban may be enough to get to the polls, shouldn't take much I live in the same building as the polling place.
Topinka is the epitome of all that is wrong with the Illinois Republican Party. I'll write in Randy Stufflebeam for gov and vote Republican downticket.
The current boy governor of Illinois, Rod Blago, took $1500 from the husband of a woman who failed the state employment test. She was later quoted in the Tribune as saying she hated Blago and that he'd ruined her life
Check out this ad by Blago's opponet, Judy Barr Topinka. Very entertaining:

How could they possibly clash over ethics when neither of them knows what it is?
Hate to differ. More corrupt than Topinka and not yet indicted are Kjellander, Daniels, Celini, Savianno and others closer to George Lyan.
Topinka was only on the fringes of corruption until 2001 at which time she was forced to consciously make a choice between corruption and anti-corruption and she consciously chose to side with corruption. Before that, she had a foot on each side of the fence.
On the contrary, the Dims have have a very effective ground game and GOTV - Get Out Their Vote.
Meanwhile the conservative activists are not out knocking on the doors in key districts and apparently will not get out the vote.
Winner and loser are not determined by ideology or media hype. They are determined by who delivers the vote on the ground. That is the way Peter Fitzgerald won in '98. It is the way Bush lost in 2000 and won in 2004.
"Gun control is being pushed again."
It plays well in NE IL. I grew up close to there and Chicagoans & suburbanites have a pathological fear/hatred of firearms. Personally, when it gets to it, I want to be able to defend my family effectively, not make a political statement. And dialing 9-1-1 isn't defending my family effectively when it hits the fan.
The thing with Blago is that he knows that his AW ban is completely worthless. He's trading on it to win in chicago and the 'burbs. When they tried to pass it last session they reached something like -- no joke -- a dozen amendments that watered the effect of the bill to 0 except for new "ugly" guns, the .50 BMG, and new high cap mags (yes, all current weapons and mags grandfathered in--no registartion either). For him it is always a WIN because if his BS doesn't pass he blames the legislators for being weak on 'crime guns' and if he gets 'lucky' he can thump his chest next to his pal Daley.
He talks a very different game "downstate" (which also includes the rural northern part where I reside). His duplicity sickens me. He praises shooters at the new World Shooting Complex at Sparta and then stabs us in the back. We already have a silly FOID card system that stopped making any sense from any practical standpoint long ago (owing to instant background checks)And, I don't like his haircut either.
Judy is not all that I'm looking for either, but you know where you stand with her. As long as she empties those lipstick stained butts from the ashtray once in a while, she's got my vote.
I don't trust her. Blagojevich was an improvement over Ryan, and I'm not sure JBT wouldn't be a step back. I intend to write-in for Randy Stufflebeam as a vote of non-approval for both candidates.
We already have a silly FOID card system that stopped making any sense from any practical standpoint long ago (owing to instant background checks)Back in 1993, while Blagojevich one of was Chicago's state reps, he proposed requiring firearm owner's identification card renewals every year instead of every five, at $100 per year. "The five-year cost of being a registered gun owner would jump from $ 5 to $ 500". This was a year after the state started instant background checks.
Yeh, but you know he'll tell you he didn't really mean it. If he fails in his latest lapse in logic, and/or in getting elected, a funny thing will happem: Since he has permitted pistol hunting for deer in many counties, and opened the WSC at Sparta, one could argue that under his rule sportsmen enjoyed a net GAIN in rights. He must lose the AS ban and go away to ensure such a nice legacy.
I AGREE, THE CROOKS WILL ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO GET A GUN, YOU TAKE OUR GUNS AWAY AND WE ARE AT THEIR MERCY.
