small plane crashed into a 50-story luxury high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side Wednesday, igniting a raging fire, killing at least two and initially trapping people on the floors above the point of impact.
New York Police Department officials said two were confirmed dead and there could be more fatalities.
The plane hit the building, located at 524 East 72nd Street, 20 floors above space occupied by the Hospital for Special Surgery.
The New York Fire Department told FOX News that there were people trapped above the point of impact, but the NYPD later said that all occupants located above the fire-ravaged floors had been evacuated.
By 3:30 p.m. ET, the blaze was reported to have been extinguished.
FBI spokeswoman Christine Monaco said there was no indication the crash which happened five years and one month after Sept. 11, 2001 was a terrorist attack, but officials "have been sent to the scene as a routine."
"The initial indication is that there is a terrible accident," said Department of Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke. Fighter jets, however, were scrambled and were patrolling the skies above major cities as a precaution, according to Defense Department officials.

A shame how these threads have turned into a roll call of the stupid.
actually JT The Brick, huge Yankee fan on Fox Sports
Radio, said they should have started Wang instead...
yeah. i wonder how funny it would be if it were a relative of one of them. very sad. he had a wife and son too. i read one report there were 4 dead.
When I was a kid in Chicago, the Cubs had a slick-fielding young second baseman named Kenny Hubbs. He was killed in a plane crash, too.
I agree. Prayers for the Lidle Family
Yea - if they had any conscience, I'll bet they wish they were a bit easier on him. I like them but sometimes they come across as arrogant know it alls. And their football picks suck.
Exactly.
Have they announced who the other 3 dead were?...
Right, and Baseball also lost Thurman Munson and Roberto Clemente to plane crashes. Very sad day.
Cory Fulton Lidle...Born 1972. Married Melanie Varela (1/7/97); one son, Christopher Taylor (9/18/00)...1990 graduate of South Hills High School (CA), where he was a teammate of Jason Giambi.
"Wasn't that what had happened to JFK Jr.?"
Basically, he went far off shore at night for a more direct route, and could no longer see the coast line, weather was marginal I believe.
As I was driving home this afternoon I said, "if this isn't terrorism, it's probably a despondent Yankees fan."
Aw jeez, I feel terrible now.
No disrespect for Lidle or his family but as soon as the Yankee Pitcher was announced to have been the pilot the story took a weird turn from "Bush's fault" that planes are allowed to fly unchecked on the Hudson to all about Cory Lidle.
No reflection on Lidle but it just shows the power of celebrity.
I am listening to the two idiots now. I get the feeling they feel guilty about it.
Mike, it looks like the sleaze at MSNBC and Fox are hoping for a suicide angle. The American media is a disgrace to our culture.
That remains to be seen. As a pilot I am eager to see the results of the investigation. There should be a ton of data to review.
Not as far as I know, but they were all in the apartment. Lidle was apparently the only person on the plane.

If Lidle re-signs with the Yankees, he would fly at his own risk; in the Yankees standard contract, a player who injures himself in an off-field activity like flying would jeopardize the guaranteed money in his deal.
For now, Lidle plans to enjoy flying this off-season, unburdened by the notorious California traffic.
Its basically to bring things a little closer to reach, he said. Now I can go to Pebble Beach if I want, and instead of driving there for five hours, I can fly there in an hour and 45 minutes. I can go to Arizona to golf, or Vegas, wherever.
