'Vaccinate 11-year-olds against sex virus'[UK][Cervical Cancer]

Girls as young as 11 should receive compulsory vaccinations against a sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer, according to an influential medical journal.

The Lancet published an editorial calling for compulsory jabs for 11- and 12-year-olds despite fears that they could encourage under-age sex.

The Sunday Telegraph revealed last month that ministers have commissioned secret research into parental attitudes towards a concerted vaccination programme in primary schools.

Last week the European Commission gave the go-ahead for the anti-cancer vaccine Gardasil to be used in EU member states.

The licence allows the vaccine to be given to children aged nine to 15, and women aged 16 to 26.

Gardasil offers protection against human papillomavirus (HPV), a virus spread by sexual intercourse that can trigger cervical cancer.

About 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in women in Britain each year, more than a third of which are fatal. The majority result from infection by HPV.

The Lancet said Europe should take its lead from the US state of Michigan, which passed a bill on Sept 21 ruling that all 11 to 12-year-old girls must be immunised.

The journal said there was growing support for the vaccination of both boys and girls, since men can carry HPV.

Studies have shown that female-only vaccination would be only 60-75 per cent as effective at reducing HPV prevalence in women as strategies targeting both sexes.

Why wouldn't you want your girls to get a vaccination that might save them later in life? I'm curious. Truly.

Before I get to the point, I am positive in regard to this vaccine, my potential female children will be getting it. Cervical cancer is a nasty thing, and I'm finding it difficult to be against something that prevents cancer.

As some other commenters have been saying, you might remain virginal until your wedding night and still get this from your husband, who wasn't.

Anyhow, my point:

If you take a 8-12 year old in for a vaccination, you do not have to tell them "this is a vaccination for a sexually transmitted virus but this doesn't mean you can have sex blah blah blah."

No you say, "You're going to have a shot, sit still."

Unless our daughters are born with psychic powers, how are they even going to be exposed to the sex debate part of it?

In rereading my posts you are even further off the mark than I originally thought. I'm wondering what exactly you read that put those thoughts in your head.

The point of my statement is not that I want to endanger my girls. It is the fact that a state government is mandating the vaccination. They are my children NOT the state or federal governments. I make choices for them and no one is going to force me to put something in my child's body that doesn't even have years of results of study. All my children have had immunizations. I am not against them, IF they have been around for years and we know the risks. BUT they were all done voluntarily, this sounds like the State of Michigan know better than parents, that scares me. Now, if years down the road this vaccination remains sound and has positive results, then when they turn 18, they can choose to have it. Its the choice vs mandating that upsets me. Apparently, you dont have children.

"Apparently, you dont have children."

Who needs children when you can parent other people's?

After all, it takes a village.

I wonder if someone knowing they are vaccinated vs. HPV,
will behave in more sexually risky behaviour, leading to
a pandemic which we don't have a vaccine for, such as
HIV, or who knows what.
What other little living/non-living baddie is still being
harbored in those animals, in its incubation phase, ready
to pounce on the unsuspecting transmission vectors(humans)?
Time and behaviour will tell.

Friend, the Michigan bill allow exceptions for the vaccination requirement for girls whose parents have medical, religious or philosophical issues with having their daughters receive Gardasil.

Exactly what I was saying to my wife as we discussed this earlier. Honestly, I have not read the research, it may have a limited effective period. More likely, it was tested on older children and nobody wants to spend the money for research on smaller children.

Thank you for the clarification. The article did not say there were exceptions. I am not familiar with the bill, since this was the only time I had heard of it and the article stated that the immunization was manditory. I still cannot see immunization for this on small children. Perhaps, teens. I wonder if you have to get it at this age or one can wait until say 16 or 17?

__________

Sure - you can wait until that age...you can get it as an adult as well. Talk to your family doc, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

I won't buy the first year of a new car model, and I wouldn't get myself or my kids a new vaccine. There have been vaccines pulled from the market for bad side effects, and others that probably should be.

Because the vaccine causes your daughter to ask questions you will be compelled to answer, and the left will have successfully bypassed your gatekeeper role as a parent, and forced on your child the early immersion into their culture of decadence.

Your children question you about the exact nature of their vaccines? In any case, if I, the adult, didn't feel a truthful answer was necessary, I wouldn't give a truthful answer.

I certainly wouldn't explain that liberals think she'll grow up to be a slut and as a helpless person in the world, I am compelled to explain that to her.

Like my previous post, if a woman can 'choose' to have a baby or not, why can't a parent 'choose' vaccinations for their child?

Call me crazy, but I do believe parents can get exemptions if they wish to. Are you under the impression that a public school will throw your child out if they aren't immunized? They can't kick kids out of school for assault!

I really can't see someone saying, "I've been immunized against HPV, so I'll have sex with a thousand different partners!" AIDS and genital warts are still out there. If they are disinclined to worry about those diseases, HPV wouldn't have stopped them either.
