LGF reader Enlil from Gothenburg, Sweden, sent the following disturbing note:
Tonight there were power shortages all over Sweden’s second largest city, Gothenburg. “Youth gangs” took the opportunity, spreading the European tradition of “Ramadan Riots.” Within an hour most schools and commercial centers in the north eastern suburbs were vandalized.
- It’s complete chaos in north eastern Gothenburg. “We’ve sent all available police units but there’s no way we can stop the vandalisation,” police spokesman Frank Karlsson tells gp.se.
- Several youth gangs are wandering about smashing windows and breaking into schools, malls, banks and a retirement center.
Not a word about this on the wires...

Reinfeldts paternal great grandfather, John Reinfeldt, was the illegitimate son of Emma Dorotea Reinfeld, a maid from Eckau in today's Latvia, and a mulatto circus director from New York, John Hood, who among other things, claimed to be a cannibal. Emma Dorotea Reinfeld later married the Swede Anders Karlsson, but her son John kept his mother's surname. The spelling was later changed to Reinfeldt. Also, his paternal grandmother was of Italian descent.

Ramadan Riots has a certain ring to it, you have to admit. Might I suggest Christams Chaos? After all, the Christian religion is responsible for all things bad in the world, second only to George Bush of course.

First of all, it transpires today that the police reports our first article relied on were greatly exaggerated. Some damage to windows occured, as well as some stone throwing at police officers. But there was nothing that could be described as full scale rioting – not even by our modest Swedish standards.
What occurred was vandalism during the blackouts in northeast Gothenburg, but not riots, nor "chaos".

As for the religious beliefs of the youths involved, the following facts should be taken into consideration:
– No arrests were made, so the identities of the people responsible are not possible to determine, nor their ethnic origin or religious beliefs (if any)
– The areas concerned have a large immigrant population, but are far from exclusively muslim

I saw nothing in the American news. Also the riots in France. I guess the mainstream media want us to think that the "Holy month" is for praying, fasting, bowing toward the East, and not for finding more reasons to hate Christians and Jews, learning about what kind of knives to use to slice heads off, what kind of stones to use on adulterers, what kind of belts to use for strapping bombs on one's children, where to get the best deals on car bombs, where to sit on a bus to kill the most women and children.
Me either. It's not impossible that blogs would make more from the article than what's there. You might see Wuli's post in 87, an English response from the paper.

I live in Gothenburg and from what I can tell, people here don't seem to bother much about some smashed windows. Most of them would probably say this riot is nowhere near what has happened in cities like Paris or Los Angeles.
Today Hjällbo together with neighboring Hammarkullen is probably the poorest parts of Gothenburg. Other suburbs housing a lot of immigrants in that part of the city, like central Angered (Hjällbo and Hammarkullen are parts of Angered), Lövgärdet, Gårdsten etc have improved a lot during the last 15 years and doesn't strike you as "poor". In fact, in the eyes of most europeans and US americans, these areas would appear to them as "middle class" areas. North East Gothenburg in general is poor for being Gothenburg, but not "poor" like poor areas of american cities.
I've actually lived in Hjällbo myself. I lived there for the first 12 months of my life.
At that time a lot of young swedish couples lived there. Mostly people from working and middle class segments of the population.
I guess already at that time several immigrant families lived there as well. People from Finland, Italy, Greece and former Yugoslavia who'd come to Sweden to work in our industries and begin a new life.
Later on, swedes moved out. In the case of my parents, they did so rather quickly, as they had both gotten good jobs and - although they'd only been working for a short time since leaving university - could afford to buy a nice house (in beautiful Mariestad). We later moved back to Gothenburg.
As families from Southern Europe who'd been working hard in Sweden could afford to buy better appartments or houses of their own, immigrants from Chile and some years later Iran, Iraq and Lebanon moved in. This was during the seventies and eighties.
As time has went by, several of them also moved to more attractive areas of the city and during the nineties a lot of africans moved in instead. Despite the fact that Gothenburg has been one of the regions with the strongest economic growth for 15 years now IN THE WHOLE OF EUROPE, a lot of africans from Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia and Eritrea STILL can't find work. In many cases they speak very little swedish or no swedish at all.
I can't get into my head why there still are unemployed people in Gothenburg.
Look at the job opportunities offered by a company like Volvo.
Volvo is an immensely succesful company (or rather two companies) with several large plants in Gothenburg, both the personal vehicle part that is owned by Ford and the part that still is Swedish (producing heavy trucks, buses, maritime engines etc, etc). Volvo in Gothenburg is screaming for labor. People from all parts of the world work there - but very, very few africans.
Social security in Sweden will allow you to live quite comfortably, but it can't be compared to the lifestyle you can afford by earning 50 000 - 60 000 dollars a year (leaving you with something like 35 - 40 000 dollars after taxes) as an industrial worker at Volvo.
If you prefer to stay on social security benefits to working at Volvo, you have to be either extremely lazy, stupid or ascetic. In some cases this is the problem with african immigrants, but in other cases I guess you could say their culture is too different from the swedish one for them to stand any chance at all of adopting to swedish society.
Many iranians and iraqis who've come to Sweden have been well educated ones and were used to hard work in their home countries. Furthermore a lot of them hated Saddam and/or the mullahs of Iran. They were in most cases what I guess you could call "secularized" muslims. Many of them drink alcohol and even eat pork. The people from East are very different. I don't have much hope for them. Perhaps their children will get a better understanding of what it means to live in a advanced, civilized society - but throwing stone at the police is not a good way to advance towards the goal of becoming a decent, responsible citizen.
Thanks, I admit to having a problem getting my mind around the severity of these problems in Europe. I know European coverage of incidents in America wouldn't square with local perceptions. You seem to be saying that a component of this is socal, as in lower economic class, welfare state dependents, if Muslim, not motivated my radical Islamism. Which would explain the differing news coverage. The risk, of course, is that a deprived economic class dependent on the state provides fertile ground for radicalism. A problem the US faces as well.
