SEOUL, South Korea Oct 9, 2006 (AP) There were no signs of any unusual military activity in North Korea after it declared it had tested a nuclear bomb for the first time, South Korea said Monday.
Earlier, the South said it had put its military on higher alert and boosted efforts to determine if there was any radioactive fallout from the test.
"No particular movement has been detected in the North Korean military both in the front and the rear," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said it was closely watching the communist state for any signs of provocation.
"The South and the U.S. are maintaining a joint readiness under a joint crisis management system," it said. "As part of efforts to strengthen surveillance and readiness, we're increasing patrols near the border and all heads of military units were ordered to keep their posts."
It also said the military is stepping up efforts to see if there is any radioactive fallout from the test.
Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung will hold a meeting of senior military commanders on Tuesday to assess the situation and to discuss a contingency plan, it said.
The ministry also said an annual meeting of South Korean and U.S. defense ministers, scheduled for Oct. 20 in Washington, could be rescheduled because of the nuclear crisis.
"The situation is fluid regarding when and where the meeting will be held," a ministry official said on condition of anonymity citing policy.

I recall nuke material being offered to NK by the Clintons -- Mentally Il had to promise to use it for peaceful purposes only.
DailyCuss and DummyUnderground are probably going nuts with the Rumsfeld lie.
If President Bush, VP Cheney, Sec. Rumsfeld or most any GOP official cured cancer, DU/Kos/Huff&blo would say they did it to benefit "big pharma" and other "running dog capitalists".
That was predictable... low-life but predictable.WilliamofCarmichael wrote: "I recall nuke material being offered to NK by the Clintons -- Mentally Il had to promise to use it for peaceful purposes only."
And of course the Rhodes scholar himself believed him.
Ping to reassuring headline courtesy of... ABC News.
I saw this and ignored it.
THANKS though for the ping bd476.
Alas, you were very wise to ignore it. :-)
Isn't the perky one at that channel heading up the nightly news?
Winner! LOL!
Oh that's right! Makes me wonder which Socialist country she'd hide out in when she gets the tip that missiles are headed here.
They also say there is a vast right wing conspiracy to direct attention away from their vast left wing conspiracy.
They say the Republicans and Karl Rove are planning an October surprise as they keep pulling rabbits out of the hat of corruption which they have been gathering for years.
Because the media cover for them I suppose they think we are all blind to their projection and hypocraisy. Or maybe it is simply the Big Lie in practice.
We should easily see what kind of people will run the country if the Democrats win. No one should want that no matter any gripe with the present administration.
I think she's on cBS.
Idiots --- they can't wait to get back to the Foley story.
You have a point, pardon the pun.
Thanks onyx.
They don't consider an a-bomb test to be "unusual military activity?"
Apparently they don't.
It sure seems that way.
They're so transparent.
