There's 'tickling the tail of the dragon' seeing just how close you can get to critical with out actually killing yourself. Measuring neutron flux and other parameters helps refine the bomb design and verifies one's calculations.

We ran test like this during the Manhattan Project. Only killed a couple scientists, IIRC.

I was watching CNN, the hostess (whose name I haven't a clue) was interviewing General Kimmit (I think that was his name) about Iraq and other stuff, when this news broke. She was absolutely PANICKED and INSANE...asking questions like: When will we have boots on the ground there? Will we have a draft now? etc, etc, etc. General Kimmit stayed calm and almost laughed at her questions, saying, don't get ahead of yourself you crazy lady (my interpretaton of the look on his face; those were not his words). Anyway..I switched over to MSNBC who had the most astute Andrea Mitchell as their breaking news cover girl (I laughed and switched the channel). FNC is doing just fine with COL Hunt on the phone.
