Another Republican congressman knew of disgraced former representative Mark Foley's inappropriate Internet exchanges as far back as 2000 and personally confronted Foley about his communications.
A spokeswoman for Rep. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) confirmed yesterday that a former page showed the congressman Internet messages that had made the youth feel uncomfortable with the direction Foley (R-Fla.) was taking their e-mail relationship. Last week, when the Foley matter erupted, a Kolbe staff member suggested to the former page that he take the matter to the clerk of the House, Karen Haas, said Kolbe's press secretary, Korenna Cline.
source with direct knowledge of Kolbe's involvement said the messages shared with Kolbe were sexually explicit, and he read the contents to The Washington Post under condition that they are not reprinted. But Cline denied the source's characterization, saying only that the messages had made the former page feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, she said, "corrective action" was taken. Cline said she still has not yet determined whether that action went beyond Kolbe's confrontation with Foley.

The only sexually explicit stuff was with FORMER pages who were adults so your analogy is inapt.

Hey WAPO. We don't care.
Ain't gonna vote to have my taxes raised, scuttle the NSA, neuter the Swift terror money tracking system, green light impeachment and most definitely won't cast a vote that will lead to Speaker Pelosi.
Beat the dead horsie all you want.

And what action was that? By encouraging him to run for re-election? They did not take any serious action. When Hastert was told a 52yr old gay congressman was sending creepy e-mails to a 16yr old boy he should have immediately started investigating this guy, especially since this dirt bag was on a committee that had close interactions with the Pages. In addition The speaker of the House is not a policeman. His position cannot fire Foley, Foley is elected by the citizens in his Florida district. When he first heard of the emails he properly informed the FBI and the ethics committee. No charges could be filed according to the FBI. Then as Speaker of the House, Hastert told Foley to no longer send emails to the pages. Foley stopped. You are assuming that Hastert did not do his job. Get up to speed! And how did you get your information that Hastert encouraged Foley to rerun any more that any other Republican?

Hastert did not inform the ethics committee. There was no investigation. In my opinion he did nothing.
What Foley did was probably not even illegal, but it was surely unbecoming of a member of congress and Hastert should have a zero tolerance for this type of behavior.
As the Speaker of the House Hastert has a lot of ways to discipline congressman who behave in this manner. In addition, it was Tom Reynolds who is in charge of the Republican reelection committee for the House who encouraged Foley not to retire.
This whole mess could have, and should have, been avoided had the Republican leadership been doing their job.

Piffle.
I was looking to see if ANYONE had suggested Tip O'Neill should resign when Studds afdmitted having sex with an intern--you know, actual sex--not an email to an EXpage asking about his vacation. And I see no one did. And if someone had they'd have been laughed out of town by the party that gave Studds a standing ovation for his defiance when censured.

But those were democrats. We expect this type of behavior from a liberal democrat not from a member of the Republican party.

That is only going to be possible if RINO, liberal and backstabbing Republicans are removed from office. The bad apples need to go. Abramoff, DeLay, Ney, Foley were not liberal, were not rinos and not really backstabbers either. The rinos are typically the most honorable. That would be collins, dole, snowe, etc.
Before exclusively bashing the rinos, you might want to consider where the corruption is comming from.
Didn't Gingrich and Livinston also have to resign ?
To: martinidon
you are little behind. the media intially reported the page to be 16, but since then it is been found he was 18.
still not good, but it is not even criminal what foley did.
To: Ol' Sparky; Fawn
foley sent emailed pages only after they left the page program.
I did a similar thing. I asked a student out only after she finished my college class. She said no.
Generally, the consensus at the time was that you can do this after they leave your class/page/intership/whatever.

Lets keep the facts straight.
The instant messages (IM's) that were sexual in nature went to an 18yr old. Those IM's were several years old.
The creepy e-mails went to a 16yr old last year. It is the 16yr old parents who complained to their congressman in LA about Foley sending creepy e-mails to their 16 yr old son.

Maybe you are mistaken. Here is a link that is sort of a time line. The overtly friendly e-mails and the sexual explicit IM's are two different events with two different individuals. The creepy e-mails went to a 16yr old boy. The IM's were with an 18yr old who some people have claimed the kid said was a prank. Who know the real story here, but the bottom line is it appears a lot of people knew about this dirt bag Foley and nothing was done about it.

Foley certain has had sex with pages. It's just a matter of how many he had sex with.
To: the Real fifi
The only sexually explicit stuff was with FORMER pages who were adults so your analogy is inapt. Oh, okay, was perfectly acceptable for Foley to making advances toward pages he was working with so long as he didn't have sex with them? It's beginning to get harder and harder to tell the difference between liberals and Democrats and many conservatives and Republicans.
It's pathetic that anyone would try to diminish what Foley did or support the Republican leadership that ignored his behavior.

I heard ~~so~~ far he only had sex with an Ex-Page...he waits till they done 'paging'...and are 18. Do you have more absolute info?

I think some are having trouble with the 'look but don't touch' thing. Foley did alot of looking (and emailing)--but no touching....until what did he say....they were '18 the magic number'.
