Foley: The Final Straw
Time ^ | October 7, 2006 | Frank Luntz

Had enough?

America has. Anyone who reads the polls accurately and honestly will acknowledge that the Republican Party is likely to lose control of the House of Representatives, the so-called "People's House." The Democrats maintained control for 40 years. The Republicans, just 12.

What went wrong? Why do Democrats finally appear to be heading toward electoral success and Republicans back into the political wilderness? In a word, fatigue. Americans are tired of the war, tired of watching illegal aliens race across our unguarded borders, tired of high energy costs, tired of wasteful Washington spending, and tired of story after story of political corruption and misbehavior.

As a pollster, my job is to tap the public mood. As a linguist, my efforts are focused on the words of the electorate and how best to communicate a set of priorities and principles. For the past three months, in focus groups literally from coast to coast — and a dozen states in between — I have heard the constant grumblings of Republicans that their party didn't do enough to follow through on their promises and the anger of Democrats who felt the G.O.P. went too far. Damned if you do. Damned if you don't.

And the language voters now use to describe Congress can only be heard after nasty divorce settlements and in the subways of New York. I've had voters spit on me as they emphasize the "d" in "do nothing" and the "c" in "corrupt."

Who can blame them? The Republican Party of 2006 is a tired, cranky shell of the aggressive, reformist movement that was swept into office in 1994 on a wave of positive change. I knew those Republicans. I worked for them. They were friends of mine. These Republicans are not those Republicans.

Frank Luntz has always seemed like a pollster with an obvious agenda. I would bet he is mostly wrong with his prognosis of results, while he is mostly right with assessing "the mood" of the voter.

It took us forty years, forty long years, to take the Congress back from the Dems the last time they took control.

If the Dems take control, it might be time for a viable Conservative Party to be formed.

I'm not selfish enough to want everything my way as so many of you here are. I'll be satisfied with whatever it takes to keep the Republican party in the House, Senate and WH because I can foresee what will happen if we lose any of them.

"Maybe 2 years of Democrat control of Congress is exactly the thing to bring both parties back into line."

I once thought in that direction. But after a severe scolding by Freeper Owen, (thanks Owen!) I now think even 2 years of dim control of either house would be disastrous.

Luckily, I'm in a safe R district. I've been channeling my meagre funds to folks like MS. Irey in hopes that we can pick up a few surprise upsets, and her's would be a significant psychological victory regardless the results of the overall election.

While I doubt the dims would obtain veto proof majority in either house, President Bush has shown an absolute fear of using the veto. IOW, we can not count on him to stop their onslaught of leftist legislation, especially if he is under threat of impeachment. And believe me his administration will be under FULL ASSAULT if they take over.

The best result of Nov. 7, of course, would be we maintain control of both houses, if for nothing else, just to maintain a full court press against against the Islamofacists. This election cycle has exposed in full color who the RINO's are. Let's get electable conservative Republicans in the primaries for '08 and get this country back on the path to President Reagan's vision.

At best, IF WE LOSE both houses, there will be gridlock and nothing will be done other than budget maintenance and there will be no terrorist attacks. In this case, the dims, with continued and amplified MSM support, will enter the 2008 election cycle blaming the Pubbies with obstructionism in addition to same crap they are pandering now. Thus, their slogans will be along the lines of "Finish what you started in '06 and give us the Executive Branch so we can finish the job."

At worst, IF WE LOSE both houses, in order to avoid impeachment, President Bush will capitulate to numerous, narrowly passed leftist resolutions (some of which he doesn't really oppose). This scenario basically gives them control of the whole enchilada in '06. We get attacked. Their slogans in '08 will then reflect, "We were able to get this done, even with a Republican in charge, and we still got attacked because it was Bush's fault. Just think of our bright, safe secure future with a dim in the White House too!"

I think it may go down somewhere in between. If we lose one or both houses, the dims play it cool, hiding the fact they are concerned only with being in control. The MSM of course will continue their blind allegiance to the dims. We don't get attacked because President Bush still has the troops.
Some leftist legislation gets passed and signed. No conservative legislation gets passed and signed. Status quo. Full body contact in election cycle '08.

We'd better start identifying and supporting electable conservatives for all offices in '08 right now!

If the Dems take control, it might be time for a viable Conservative Party to be formed I have been thinking about the same thing, time to take the conservative vision back under the voters control. Remember: "Free Republic is the premier online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web." It's not just about Republican vs Democrats.

"Nothing becomes law without a President's signature on it. Do you think Bush will sign into law Amensty, Tax increases etc?"

How many times has he exercised his veto power?

In a word, #$*%$#! How can anyone read that sentence and think that Republicans are going to hand over our country to Democrats! The only point you could possibly give to this guy is we are tired of war. The rest of the reasons are every reason why we will fight not to let Democrats gain control again!

If Democrats take over this country, I think I will go join the Taliban.

The DemocRATic party IS THE TALIBAN. They despise America every bit as much as Osama Bid Laden. We don't call the DemocRATs the "hate America first" party for nothing. The top party leaders are immoral, corrupt in every way, and communists. In fact, they have been for decades.

Some interesting things to think about, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness. You have certainly addressed my concerns with more respect than the unconvincing knee-jerk responses I have received so far.

I'd like to address something you wrote about the "most likely" scenario:

Some leftist legislation gets passed and signed. No conservative legislation gets passed and signed.

I believe that this is what will happen regardless of the outcome of the election. GOP holds both houses, it will happen - as has happened for six years. GOP loses both houses, it'll still happen. GOP loses one, wins one, no functional difference. Either "choice" leads to the same result. Voting for one or the other endorses this. In good conscience I cannot endorse this as I believe it leads directly to the destruction of our nation. Thus I can see no other option, in expressing my preference through the ballot, than voting for none of the above.

One more point with regard to impeachment, forgot to add - I am increasingly seeing impeachment as a "red-on-red" scenario. As you noted, the President sympathizes and agrees with a lot of the leftist agenda. I no longer see him as "one of us", not after years of appeasing Islam and working for Mexican interests above American interests, not after years of spending that would make even the Dems blush, and not after his enactment of the prescription drug program, a socialist abomination the likes of which we had not seen created since the days of Lyndon Johnson.

The nastier it gets, the less chance of any legislation being passed at all. Since any legislation that does get passed will almost certainly be bad for us, this is the best possible scenario I see going into 2006. Furthermore, impeachment attempts will backfire onto the Democrats, probably worse than it did when we impeached Clinton, so I say, let them try.

A night in bed with Nancy Pelosi.

I hope the Democrats are overreaching. I'm tired of their dripping unsubstantiated rumors of all the pages being hit upon by Foley. I am definitely opposed to Foley being around any young people, but I question why these young men didn't have the intestinal fortitude to tell Foley they did not wish to hear from him and would report him if he didn't stop. Too much of this story doesn't pass the smell test.

I agree the Republicans should have shut down the McCain wing of the the Party, and they should have struck back at the MSM rather than trying to get along with them. More Republicans should have told the media off like Zell Miller did Chris Matthews. He made Matthews look like the idiot he is and more of the media should be told off publicly. Republicans have been attacked constantly by the Democrats and they need to attack back. I don't believe the Democrats understand anything about fairness and honesty, so I would give them a good dose of their own medicine. I'd bring charges against Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid for doing damage to our military with their loose lips and lies, and I'd go after a few more of their dishonest members. I'd call them on their lies and point it out every time I was interviewed. The Democrats need to be taught a lesson and be held accountable for their actions. Kennedy, McDermott, Franks, Studds, Hillary, Bill, and others have never been held accountable for their criminal acts. Whatever happened to the 'bouncer', Craig Livingstone, Hillary hired and lied about? Someone needs to find out what he did with the FBI records he confiscated for Hillary! We never got the answers from the Clinton's we were entitled to. To this day, Bill Clinton has never made his medical records public! Before we dis the Republicans, let's put the Democrats through a few hoops and see how they fair when the pressure is constantly on them.
