Who would have held it against him?

Every lawyer has the ethical duty of zealousness for his client. Taking a dive just because the defendant is particularly unsavory is grounds for disbarment.

Put it this way - if I were a Navy JAG, and ordered to defend a terrorist, I'd do it to the best of my abilities. That's part of what makes us better than them.

If you knew he was guilty (he confessed to you) and he wanted to take the stand in his own defense and you felt that, because he came across as an honest guy, if he testified it might just get him acquited, would you put him on the stand?

"Every lawyer has the ethical duty of zealousness for his client"

Even when his 'client' is someone who has no legal, or moral right to access to our judicial processes? A sworn enemy of this country?

You're a real piece of work!

You feel the need to prove you are better than them? A little self righteous while they are wishing you were dead.

Did you ever see the episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation when Commander Riker was ordered to act as opposing counsel to prove his friend Data was machine and not a self aware life form? Great illustration of the principle you describe.

File this in your "There ought to be a law" file: Never mention the term "ethics" and "lawyer" in the same breath.
