Murtha's hometown paper showcases Boot Murtha Rally co-chairmen: 'Local guys with global mission'

Johnstown Sunday paper:
“Local guys with global mission”

Beam and Minnick – much like Murtha – have deep roots in the region
 –Johnstown Tribune-Democrat

[EXCERPTS]

Why would two guys you had never heard of take on political powerhouse John Murtha?

Harry Beam, a Vietnam War veteran, and Craig Minnick, who served in the Persian Gulf, say they are not interested in political debates.

The believe that the congressman was wrong to call for a withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and wrong to publicly denounce Marines charged with murdering civilians at Haditha, Iraq.

That's why they worked together to organize the "Boot Murtha" rally held last Sunday at the Cambria County War Memorial Arena...

Beam and Minnick -- much like Murtha -- have deep roots in the region...

Minnick pointed to the "Veterans for Murtha" rally held last Saturday in Central Park. That event, he said, featured speakers with no ties to the region or the 12th Congressional District.

"There was a misconception that (the "Boot Murtha" rally) was Larry Bailey's group out of North Carolina coming into town," Minnick said. "If I'm not mistaken, the 'Vets for Murtha' group is led by a former senator out of Georgia (Max Cleland). So when I hear Gov. Rendell speaking about how these 'outsiders' need to go home, I'm confused. I guess he thinks Georgia is part of Pennsylvania."

Boot Murtha bump! Great coverage from a paper that matters in this race. Voters are getting the message--and if Irey can raise enough money, TV ads will be starting soon.

Thank you for posting!

Why take on an institution such as Jack Murtha – whose name is on the local airport and on many buildings across town – in a region which is heavily Democratic?

WHY Chip? How about because he is one of the most corrupt "institutions" presently sitting in Washington, DC?

“When you look at it politically, Republicans are outnumbered roughly 2-to-1 in Cambria County,” Beam said. “But I’m not looking at this politically, and I don’t think other people are either.

Hmmmmmmmmm, 2:1 yet President Bush won Cambria County!

Cambria County: Bush -- 50.8 -- 34,048 -vs- kerry -- 48.7 -- 32,591

“People are motivated by a lot of things. There are a significant number of religious people around here who simply put the Lord above everything else. Right under that is their families. And right under that, they’re patriotic and they love their country and they support the military.”

When these people understand the truth about Murtha, there is no way the majority will continue to support him no matter how much pork he brings to the district.

This article in the Trib/Dem is informative and points out that that message originates from residents of the district. This should make Murtha very nervous, because after all as has been rightly said, politics is a local thing.

Thanks for the article and the ping.

I heard from a friend in Johnstown that Murtha's toadies are out door-knocking in neighborhoods up there. I bet he hasn't had to do anything like that in years, if ever.

Interesting letter to the editor in today's Johnstown Tribune-Democrat:

This voter is yearning for the Murtha of old

BY PEDRO O. VEGA

— I've voted for U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha since 1994, my first election as a Johnstown resident. I did so because I liked his style of quiet leadership, moral authority, a talent to bring people of differing viewpoints together to work for the interest of the American people, an emphasis on a strong national defense and his belief that if he brought people to the region by bringing in new enterprises, or by empowering local residents to rise to the middle class, he would create the critical mass needed to reverse this area's fortunes.

By and large, he has done it.

Yet, for the first time in 12 years, I am having doubts about supporting him in this upcoming election.

Murtha was, until recently, representative of an endangered species of Democrat – a reminder of what that party used to be:

People-oriented, strong on national defense, a promoter of international cooperation; a relic of a time when to be called progressive didn't mean that people of conscience must support a woman's absolute and unrestricted rights to abortion, same-sex marriages and the subordination of the national interest to the whims of a snobbish international community or worse, to the caprice of non-state actors.

I liked President Kennedy's notion of the Democratic Party. As a dreamer myself, I am still attracted to Kennedy's "idealism without illusions," that is, a capacity to dream of a better world while being painfully aware of our mediocrity and shortcomings and their effect on policy.

All that died with him in November 1963 and with him, that old Democratic Party that Murtha has symbolized for me.

Murtha has been generally pro-life, he remains mostly a social conservative, but has given in, I'm afraid, to the currents now reigning in the Democratic Party and has aligned himself too closely with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, becoming too cozy with politicians who are anything but pro-life or keenly interested in protecting the integrity of marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman.

He has surrendered on one issue that endangers our national security:

The successful prosecution of the war in Iraq and the projection of American power in the Middle East to attenuate the threat of terrorism here and elsewhere. By giving in on one issue, he has undermined my trust that he will be able to hold much longer on the two other issues.

To date, Murtha has failed to explain how a "redeployment" of our troops from Iraq will enhance our national security and our interests in the region against the ambitions of the Islamofascists and the defiance of an emboldened Iran.

My disagreement with Murtha does not mean I will vote for his opponent, Diana Irey. Although Irey strikes me as a dynamic, articulate person, she's just "the anti-Murtha."

Anyone can be an anti-Murtha, but I want to know more about what Irey intends to do for this region and she has failed to articulate that.

Murtha has one month to explain how his policy suggestions on Iraq will enhance, not undermine, national security; to distance himself from Pelosi, and to become again the "Old Murtha" I once knew, before I vote for him.

Irey has the same amount of time to convince me that she's something more than an "anti-Murtha."

Otherwise, I will abstain from voting in this election, or write in the name of another candidate whom I believe will do a better job representing our district.

Very interesting letter. I could follow his reasoning all the way down it until he got to the part about not voting or voting a write in.

If a person feels that strongly about issues of the candidates and those candidates haven't made them clear to him, he should go the extra mile and find out for himself, that's why candidates have offices.

As citizens, the most important voice we have is our vote and should not be with held or squandered on a write in candidate, IMO. Life is a series of choices and we try to make the best choices, no candidate can satisfy a persons every whim.

..And there's this letter from the Washington Observer-Reporter, another prominent newspaper in the 12th district.:

Murtha failing to protect us

Sunday, October 08, 2006

Congressman John Murtha continues to show his true colors, and they are not the red, white and blue of the flag our brave servicemen and women are defending around the globe.

Murtha recently voted against the Security Fence Act of 2006, which approved building 700 miles of double-layered fencing along the 2,000 mile U.S.-Mexican border.

Murtha is obviously promoting his anti-administration position in search of a coveted leadership position over the well-being of the nation and its citizens that he swore to serve and protect.

Concerning the Washington County commissioners' pay, Diana Irey has made two motions to reconsider the action and freeze all county elected official's pay increases. Both died for a lack of a second.

Hopefully there are thousands more getting upset with Murtha as these two are. He and other corrupt politicians like him have to go and should be replaced with people who care about the country, like Diana Irey.

Well, the word is getting out in the district, that's for sure.

The letter below is an example of the desperation among un-informed Murtha supporters. They sense what's coming and are reduced to shamelessly using the grief of families of the fallen, childish rants, and outright begging people to vote for Jack.

From today's Uniontown Herald-Standard:

10/08/2006

Vote for Murtha, a veteran who cares

I feel compelled to write a letter in support of my congressman, U.S. Rep. Jack Murtha. First, I applaud his stand against our current policies in Iraq. Murtha is considered a hawk by many, and is as strong as they come on war issues.

I find it so hypocritical that all the national Republican talking heads are trashing this good and decent man, after courting his support in defense spending in years gone by. What do we know as facts? Fact one, I personally know of one family whose son died because of failed Bush policies. May God bless this very special family; I personally know they support Murtha and do appreciate his efforts.

We should never forget the service of our sons and daughters, and I know that Murtha has been there for this family. I want to thank him for that. Bush-Cheney allowed our troops to go into harm's way without basic body armor. Would they send their sons and daughters over there? We all know the answer to that glaring question.

They sure did cash those checks for services never rendered to provide fuel, etc. I believe we already have a congressman that is there for us, and the fact that he is being attacked by this disgraceful group formally known as the Swift boat-something-or-others shows that he has struck a cord with the Bush backers.

All I ask of the Ann Coulters of the world is to put on a uniform and go and fight on the front lines for your beloved George. And don't ask for any body armor or you are against the war on terror. The real facts in these elections show us just how important it is to vote for Murtha and send King George and his cronies a real clear message. Please vote for Jack Murtha.

Michael J. Cavanagh
