This is not a "fad." Pentecostal and charismatic Christians have been influencing those in the RCC and elsewhere for decades at least.
While there is some oddity in these denominations, and some false doctrine in some congregations, for the most part it's my understanding that they're biblically sound.
The great Puritan Jonathan Edwards, I suppose, could be considered a pastor of one of these holy roller churches, so I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss them as heretical (though, of course, the RCC does consider them anathema)....
Methodists also began as such. How far they have wandered from . . . by my Spirit, says The Lord!
Amen, Theo. Trouble is too many dead churches don't believe in the gifts of the HS. God is about to break out miracles and signs and I'm sure they'll say it's of the devil. I'm a charismatic Christian and I don't hear many tongues spoken in church anymore. The early movement in the 80s focussed on signs and not the Word but it's changed dramatically in the past 20 years. We're very word-oriented in our church but we believe in the gifts of the Spirit and operate in them. God has only started to pour His Spirit out on all nations and the folks that don't want to receive it will be left out.
Three popes have acknowledged the movement: Pope Paul VI, Pope John Paul II, and Pope Benedict XVI. Pope John Paul stated that the movement was integral to the renewal of the entire Catholic Church. Both Popes Paul and Benedict, while acknowledging the good aspects of the movement, at the same time urge caution to its members to maintain their link to the Catholic Church.
