5 major food companies agree to snack guidelines that would ban Snickers
Snacks sold in schools will have less fat, sugar and salt under the latest crackdown on junk food won by former President Clinton.
Just five months after a similar agreement targeting the sale of sodas in schools, Clinton and the American Heart Association announced a deal Friday with several major food companies to make school snacks healthier the latest assault on the nations childhood obesity epidemic.
This is voluntary, Clinton said. They dont have to do it. But they recognize the challenge we face, and they are helping us face the first step.
Clinton said the obesity problem is hurting the American economy by contributing to high health care costs.
The agreement with Kraft Foods Inc., Mars Inc., Campbell Soup Co., Groupe Danone SA and PepsiCo Inc. sets guidelines for fat, sugar, sodium and calories for snack foods sold in school vending machines, stores and snack bars. Those companies make everything from M&Ms, yogurt and granola bars to Frito-Lay potato chips, Snickers bars and canned soups.
Under the guidelines, most foods wont be permitted to derive more than 35 percent of their calories from fat and more than 10 percent from saturated fat. There will be a limit of 35 percent for sugar content by weight.

Police hunt farting dissident
Police in Poland have launched a nationwide hunt for a man who farted loudly when asked what he thought of the president.
Hubert Hoffman, 45, was charged with "contempt for the office of the head of state" for his actions after he was stopped by police in a routine check at a Warsaw railway station.
He complained that under President Lech Kaczynski and his twin brother Jaroslaw, the country was returning to a Communist style dictatorship.
When told to show more respect for the country's rulers, he farted loudly and was promptly arrested.
Hoffmann was arrested and released on bail but failed to turn up at a Warsaw court early this week to be tried, and the judge in the case rejected an appeal by defence lawyers to throw the charges out.
A court spokesman said: "Such a case of disrespect is taken very seriously."
Instead the court ordered the police to start a nationwide hunt for the man, and interpol have been alerted.
What an opportunity. Like itching powder and um, Ok thats it.
Anybody see that commercial where the this dude get's his hotdog smashed and another one gets his beer knocked out of his hand? It's about the junk food nazis and whose behind it.I like the chick at the end who raises her knife as somebody's about to grab her snack and tells him"Back Off!"I swear it's getting that bad these days with all the busybody politicians running amok.
Lemme guess...junk food is subject to the same fascist "zero tolerance" policies that drugs, alcohol, and weapons are subject to. If not, they will be very soon thanks to the liberal communuts.
Personally, I would love to see Clinton as a prag (short for "prison f*g"...IOW, a "prison bitch") on the receiving end of Big Bubba's 14 inch "attitude adjustment".
Yes. And in that sense, it is no wonder that the schools are basically run like maximum-security prisons with students being treated like prisoners in said maximum-security prisons.
Personally, I think the term "high school" should be replaced with "correctional facility".
Uh, wasn't Clinton the one who got junk food into the schools via vending machines to begin with? If so, nothing like creating a problem so you can show off by solving it later.
Careful saying that...you could end up like this guy.
ROFLOL!! I'm so intimidated I won't even tell some of my favorite Polish jokes.
Maybe I'd better just let a wee little toot. Hate to spend time in the pokey for disrespecting Slick.
Audibly.
No suprise. Clinton was able to get Monica on a high protein diet.
you will enjoy this I bet:
