There was a rash of cougar sightings in Santa Fe awhile back, until somebody up there who has been outside for something other than navel-gazing pointed out it was a bobcat. Perhaps in this one case, but I assure you that there are many mountain lions in New Mexico, even close to cities.

The people I know who say they saw a mountain lion say the first thing they noticed was the really long tail - with that, it kind of rules out bobcat ;-)
