Foleygate May Turn Into CREWgate

Posted by AJStrata on October 5th, 2006

The FBI, which keeps meticulous records and has no reason to spin this mess, is now claiming that CREW had the emails as early as April and that they were so heavily redacted the FBI could not do much with them - so says the Washington Post:

Law enforcement officials said then that the e-mails did not provide enough evidence of a possible crime to warrant a full investigation. In the e-mails, Foley praises the physical attributes of one page and asks another teenager for his picture.

In subsequent days, unidentified Justice and FBI officials told reporters that the e-mails provided by CREW were heavily redacted and that the group refused to provide unedited versions to the FBI. One law enforcement official — speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation — also told The Washington Post the FBI believed that CREW may have received the e-mails as early as April and that the group refused to tell the FBI how they were obtained.

April! If CREW was so worried about the well being of these Pages why wait until July to release them to authorities if they had them in April. And as someoneMichael Barone pointed out tonight on Fox News, Crew could have provided the emails to Democrat members of the Page and Ethics Committees of the House - but they did not! Why? Why give useless versions only to the FBI in July?

What the Post is not reporting is CREW mentioned on CNN their source was a Hill Staffer. And how long did the Hill Staffer have these emails? Why is CREW obstructing the investigation?

Hassert dealt with it and told Foley to knock it off

The email's were not that bad ... and you can't fire someone just because they are gay

And it is not Hassert's fault that Democrats are out to destroy gays in DC

No mexican wall.
Spending like drunks.
90 days of sessions in this year.
Sarbanes Oxley law.

Compare Hastert to Newt Gingrich, or Dick Armey.

Yeah, let's stick with a guy who can't even lift his head to look in the camera. Who talks like he has his mouth filled. Remember the energy rally he showed up in a hybrid and then left in his SUV...and got caught in pictures? He couldn't, or his staff, couldn't even manage a simple little puff show like that.

From an article by Rick Ballard at The American Thinker:

"Theoretically, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington is a 501 C 3 corporation ( non profit) organization which purports to serve a non-partisan public watchdog purpose. A view of its ‘brag list’ of 61 Legal Actions reveals precisely one involving a Democrat, giving the lie to the non-partisan claim and placing CREW in the position of requiring a thorough review by the IRS regarding its claim to be serving any public interest other than the advancement of Democratic Party interests through subterfuge.

The single Democrat is William Jefferson of Louisiana and CREW did not find his conduct unethical until after his bribe taking was confirmed by a Department of Justice plea agreement reached with the man who had bribed him.

CREW is currently very publicly involved in the Foley scandal by claiming what amounts to a “cover up” in the FBI’s decision that further investigation of rather innocuous email messages to a page from Louisiana was unwarranted

There is a cover up involved to be sure, but it involves the unethical attempt by CREW to improperly influence the November election by drumming up a scandal where none existed. Had CREW any consideration whatsoever for ethics, they might have brought this matter to a head in June, when of one their myriad slime sources fed them copies of the emails."

Obviously Hastert didn't deal with it because Foley didn't knock it off, right?

Futhermore, dollars to donuts, do you trust a old gay chasing boys to 'knock it off'? I wouldn't. Only a idot would. Which , brings me back to my slams on Hastert. Nice guy, but dumb and elevated beyond his abilities.

I've read a lot of threads on this since last weekend.
You've made some accusations about Hastert that I can't substiantiate, such as 'He should have known this would come out'

From what I've read, I can't find that he knew anything about it until last Friday, when everyone else did thanks to ABC. He was told their were 'overly friendly' email some time ago and it was handled.

"In the fall of 2005 Tim Kennedy, a staff assistant in the Speaker’s Office, received a telephone call from Congressman Rodney Alexander’s Chief of Staff who indicated that he had an email exchange between Congressman Foley and a former House page. He did not reveal the specific text of the email but expressed that he and Congressman Alexander were concerned about it.

Tim Kennedy immediately discussed the matter with his supervisor, Mike Stokke, Speaker Hastert’s Deputy Chief of Staff. Stokke directed Kennedy to ask Ted Van Der Meid, the Speaker’s in house Counsel, who the proper person was for Congressman Alexander to report a problem related to a former page.Ted Van Der Meid told Kennedy it was the Clerk of the House who should be notified as the responsible House Officer for the page program. Later thatday Stokke met with Congressman Alexander’s Chief of Staff. Once again the specific content of the email was not discussed. Stokke called the Clerk and asked him to come to the Speaker’s Office so that he could put him together with Congressman Alexander’s Chief of Staff. The Clerk and Congressman Alexander’s Chief of Staff then went to the Clerk’s Office to discuss the matter.

The Clerk asked to see the text of the email. Congressman Alexander’s office declined citing the fact that the family wished to maintain as much privacy as possible and simply wanted the contact to stop. The Clerk asked if the email exchange was of a sexual nature and was assured it was not. Congressman Alexander’s Chief of Staff characterized the email exchange as over-friendly.

The Clerk then contacted Congressman Shimkus, the Chairman of the Page Board to request an immediate meeting. It appears he also notified Van Der Meid that he had received the complaint and was taking action. This is entirely consistent with what he would normally expect to occur as he was the Speaker’s Office liaison with the Clerk’s Office.

The Clerk and Congressman Shimkus met and then immediately met with Foley to discuss the matter. They asked Foley about the email. Congressman Shimkus and the Clerk made it clear that to avoid even the appearance of impropriety and at the request of the parents, Congressman Foley was to immediately cease any communication with the young man.

The Clerk recalls that later that day he encountered Van Der Meid on the House floor and reported to him that he and Shimkus personally had spoken to Foley and had taken corrective action.

Mindful of the sensitivity to the parent’s wishes to protect their child’s privacy and believing that they had promptly reported what they knew to the proper authorities Kennedy, Van Der Meid and Stokke did not discuss the matter with others in the Speaker’s Office."

Wrt CREW:

From same thread:
Who is C.R.E.W.?

Here’s what The Hill wrote:

One target of Republican criticism is Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), the group that last year assisted former Rep. Chris Bell (D-Texas) in drafting an ethics complaint against DeLay, which resulted in an admonishment of DeLay from the ethics committee. At last week’s press conference, Melanie Sloan, CREW’s executive director, said that DeLay should step down as majority leader.

From 1995 to 1998, CREW’s Sloan served as minority counsel for the House Judiciary Committee under Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). Before that, Sloan served as the nominations counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee under Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

According to GOP research, Mark Penn, who had been a pollster for President Clinton, and Daniel Berger, a major Democratic donor, are on CREW’s board. Spokeswoman Naomi Seligman declined several requests to reveal the membership of CREW’s board, although she confirmed that Penn and Berger are members. Last year, Berger made a $100,000 contribution to America Coming Together (ACT), a 527 group that was dedicated to defeating Bush in the presidential election, according to politicalmoneyline.com, a website that tracks fundraising.

CREW declined to respond to the RNC talking points or House GOP research.

C.R.E.W. is one of four “public interest” organizations which the RNC has long identifed as major recipients of George Soros richly-funded Open Society Institute. It is backing the risible Wilson/Plame civil suit against Cheney and others.

Did you know that CREW represents Joe & Val Wilson in their lawsuit?:
_CREW Announces Joe Wilson and Valerie Plame Wilson to Add Armitage to Civil Suit

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) announced today that it is adding former Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage to the lawsuit filed by Valerie Plame Wilson and Joseph C. Wilson against I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, Karl Rove and Vice President Richard Cheney. CREW represents the Wilsons in the litigation.

I don't know if Melanie Sloane was the 'lawyer' that was on CNN, but, I saw her screeching a couple of soundbites on another show the other night. Here's a little info about Ms Sloane:

UPDATE III: CREW is a George Soros funded organization, but there is more:

“From 1995 to 1998, CREW’s Melanie Sloan served as minority counsel for the House Judiciary Committee under Rep.

Last year, Berger made a $100,000 contribution to America Coming Together (ACT), a 527 group that was dedicated to defeating Bush in the presidential election, according to politicalmoneyline.com, a website that tracks fundraising.”

So we have a person who served under Clinton, and Rep. “Inpeachment” Conyers, who just “happened” to obtain emails and chats and “holding them” to just six weeks out of a midterm election where IF Democrats gain control of Congress, said Rep. Conyers has promised to impeach President Bush. More here.

Right. CREW was also instrumental behind the “get Delay” effort. More on CREW here. By Sloan’s admission, when she came on board at CREW her “mission” (before anything was known) was to “get Tom Delay”.

Lawyers are trained to use the truth when it is to their advantage. Anyways, this lawyer is more or less telling the FBI to bring it on. That takes a little bit of sack. But then again she is a Washington lawyer, not a bunch of religious nuts in the Texas scrub lands or a poor slob in a plywood shack in the mountains, so I suppose she knows the FBI better than they know themselves.

Since it's an active investigation, the FBI cannot comment. Ergo, the C.R.E.W. crew can say whatever they want without fear of contradiction...

You say what you want to the Feds and if it's a lie, you'll end up in the slammer....

Center for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington

www.citizensforethics.org

From http://www.citizensforethics.org/about/index.php
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington targets government officials who sacrifice the common good to special interests. We will help Americans use litigation to shine a light on those who betray the public trust:
If a public official misuses his position to demand campaign contributions, CREW will find creative ways to seek civil remedies.
If a witness is threatened or punished because she reported official misconduct, CREW will fight back on behalf of the witness — including representing that individual in court if necessary.
If a government agency withholds information to which the public is entitled, CREW will go to court to enforce legal rules regarding disclosure.
If a group libels an honest public servant, CREW will help the victim defend his reputation.
CREW will seize opportunities like these, bringing high-impact legal actions. The majority of our cases will focus on real people and their stories about the lack of government integrity. Not only do these people need and deserve our support, their stories can serve as powerful tools to seize public attention and move public opinion. CREW will work with the press, government investigators, and other public interest groups to make sure that these peoples' stories are heard. In the process, CREW will build a non-partisan investigative alliance that transcends specific issues. Our aim is to encourage officials to be open about their values and to act based upon their honest and best assessment of the public interest.
As we do this, over time CREW will develop a network of public interest groups, sympathetic government investigators and media contacts — a broader, more mainstream version of the conservative coalition that was so effective in the 90's. We will work with that network to focus public attention on government integrity and to educate the public about dishonest or disingenuous government officials. If the past decade is any indication, this network can have a substantial impact on public opinion.

ACTIVITIES

A veritable dream list of leftist antics is here:

http://www.citizensforethics.org/activities/index.php

From Katrina to Valerie Plame, these folks don’t seem terribly interested in exposing the truth…..but rather creating the spin and the environment with a “fair” sounding organization driving it.

FOIA Requests

By far, one of the more formalized partisan activities for an organization…an entire department dedicated to FOIA requests:

http://www.citizensforethics.org/activities/foia.php

I don't have any problem with CREW being a 'get Republicans' organization.

If there is getting to be got, then it is going to be done. That is politics. Been around since the first envelope in cash was slipped into the first coat pocket.

My problem is Hastert, the leadership and their poor political handling to the detriment of the party. This is hardball, sharp elbows and Hastert and the Republican Congressional leadership is responsible for how this blew up, now, in their faces.

Hastert telling a 53 year old, lying homosexual who was chasing boys to 'knock it off'. As if Foley was a 11 year old in one of Coach Hastert's gym classes, and thinking that that would work, that Foley would find a interest in knitting or pottery or something.

Has anyone, or new report, mentioned the existance of Hasterts follow up after he told Foley to 'knock it off'? If there was a follow up, what was the report? Or was there no follow up why?
