I met a couple real African Americans once. Their parents were red headed Americans surnamed MacGraw. The kids were born during an extended contract in South Africa. American citizens by virtue of parental citizenship, but born on South African soil. True African Americans. White African Americans. When their daughter tried to join an "African American" club at college, she was turned away. Seems it was really a club for black people, not "African Americans".

She tried to get classified as "African-American" on the Civil Service register. The State wouldn't allow her - she got herself a lawyer and the courts forced the state to classify her as an African American. The court ruled that if the state meant "black" instead of "African" - they would have to change their titles to say so.
