White House Won't Touch Waterboarding
Human Events Online ^ | 10-03-2006 | John Gizzi

Whether or not the new legislation governing interrogation of prisoners outlaws waterboarding -- the practice of simulating drowning that has worked in the interrogation of captured al Qaeda terrorists -- the White House refuses to say.

But days before the measure was enacted by the Senate and signed into law, one of its premier sponsors was strongly suggesting waterboarding would now be banned in future interrogations. Appearing on CBS-TV’s Face the Nation September 24, Sen. John McCain (R.-Ariz.) was asked by John Harris of the Washington Post about past claims about the legislation that “severe punishment, pain -- should not be inflicted but serious pain can. What can that possibly mean in concrete terms?”

“In concrete terms,” replied McCain, “It could mean that waterboarding and other extreme measures such as extreme deprivation, sleep deprivation, hypothermia and others would not be allowed.”

“Waterboarding” was singled out in a report by ABC News’ top investigative reporter Brian Ross as an effective means of securing information from captured al Qaeda terrorists -- among them Khalid Sheik Mohammed, one of the architects of 9/11.

In a report from Ross and Richard Esposito (abc.go.com, November 18, 2005), “. . . CIA officers who subjected themselves to the water boarding technique lasted an average of 14 seconds before caving in. They said al Qaeda’s toughest prisoner, Khalid Sheik Mohammed, won the admiration of interrogators when he was able to last between two and two-and-a-half minutes before begging to confess.”

As long as they don't do it on US citizens I say go nuts. Al Queda murders people, and don't take prisoners, well they do but they chop their heads off.

This makes me so angry. We are so damn politically correct now that we have taken away the very tools we need to protect ourselves. When some terrorist who knows where the dirty bomb in NYC is but won't tell us because the only tool we have left is to deprive him of his Diet Coke, and the bomb goes off killing hundreds of thousands of people, I hope the relatives and friends of each person killed gets a free punch in McCain's face.

Wake up, idiots! People who cut other peoples' heads off don't play by the rules and being "nicer" than they are simply means we get to take the high road to hundreds of thousands of funerals. Screw the nice stuff and do what you must to protect this country and if you don't have the stomach for it, get another job.

That's all our Constitution has to say about it. What rights are granted to enemy combatants?

I got "waterboarded" during SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistence and Escape) school back in 1983. It is a very effective interrogation tool. Strap them to the waterboard with head lower than the feet, cover their face with a towel and watch their chest. Ask them a question and when they start to inhale, dump some water on their face. It will scare the daylights out of you.

How about electrodes to the testicles Johnny? If it would save one soldier or U.S. citizen's life, I say' "Go for it!"

"John McCain you are a slut and an idiot."

You may disagree with McCain's politics and/or views on some issues as I do; but being a fellow Viet Nam combat veteran; I must object to your characterization. The man went through hell for years as a POW and deserves our respect for his service. He certainly doesn't deserve to be called a "slut and an idiot."

We can disagree with others' views without smearing them.

Semper Fi,
Kelly

Exactly why I firmly believe that water boarding should be used. I know of no one who has been able to last more than 3 minutes without singing like a canary. And if lives can be saved, I say "DO IT!"

No need, waterboarding WORKS!
I have heard of NO ONE and I mean NO ONE who has lasted more than 3 mins. before they started spilling their guts!

That's the question those of us who have been water-boarded as part of our training ask: If it's good enough to use on our own military, why not on these scumbag murderers?

Well you know what? I'm sick of others defending his absurd policies and agenda because he was a POW. Did he volunteer to be a POW? Why then do you allow his time as a POW to overshadow his stupidity today? I respect our veterans and I honor their service. But it isn't a free pass to do whatever the hell you want. John McCain's idiotic ideas have real consequences, veteran or not.

John McCain is a slut and an idiot. Not because he was in the Hanoi Hilton 40 years ago, but because of what he does today. And I don't apologize for pointing that out.

John McCain is Vichy French. Is that acceptable? At least now, I don't have to move to France. We're making progress here. Soon we'll have equal conversations with Islam like in France. I hear the police in France party with young extremists.

kahlid shiek mohammed lasted a long time (2 minutes) before spilling tons of stuff. I'm still waiting to hear from some expert, who has dies, or even been seriously hurt during the process. Giving this up is ridiculous.

If I had a choice between being waterboarded or being forced to listen to "In-a-gad-a-ga-vida" for 10 hours straight, I'd take the waterboarding...

So, basically, if McCain has his way, we won't have any way of getting information from prisoners. Oh, we can feed them, give them Quran's, exercise bikes, soccer balls, praye matts and the warm climate of Gitmo. That should get them to talk.
