This class of air craft carrier is always named after a president. And GHW Bush did a lot of different things behind the scenes to help this country. Unlike the peanut farmer who got a sub named after him.
USS John Stennis?
Besides, if that were so, what's wrong with USS James Madison, or James Monroe, John Adams, or Thomas Jefferson?
Bush served on a carrier, and a carrier is named for him. Carter served on a sub (though he left the Navy before it sailed), and a sub is named for him. It works for me, much more so than naming a carrier for John Stennis, whose contribution to the Navy consisted of making sure that it spent enough money in Mississippi.
Except for the Nimitz itself...and the Carl Vinson...and the John C. Stennis. Other than those, they're always named after presidents.
But so what. Doesn't mean Bush I is worthy of this honor. I'm not anticipating a USS Millard Filmore anytime soon either.
