When a Monroe teenager first contacted a member of Rodney Alexander's staff about email messages from former Florida Congressman Mark Foley the young man asked the staff member not to say anything. But once a reporter contacted Representative Alexander, the congressman said he had to report the incident.
The young man in question says he wants all the media attention to just go away. "He's in school and trying to understand whats going on," U.S Congress Rep. Rodney Alexander said. "He is upset, needless to say, and his parents are concerned."
Out of Washington and in his Monroe office, Representative Rodney Alexander is one of the few people talking to a Monroe teenager pulled into the latest political scandal. It's a scandal that has some making threats on the young man's life. "There are some people out there that think this young man is responsible for bringing down a member of Congress," said Alexander, "but we know that is not the case."
Once a champion for protecting children from online predators, Foley's email to a Monroe teenager asking for a picture, eventually lead to not only his resignation from Congress but the discovery of alleged sexual messages with other teenage boys. "There are emails and messages out there with severe implications," Alexander said. "Sexual implications that this young man did not receive."
Alexander says his main goal is to protect the young man's well being. One way he is doing that is by asking the media to shift the focus from one teenager. "There are other pages sponsored by other members of Congress," Alexander said. "No one is saying what did they do? What did they know? How did they try to stop this?"
Hopefully questions that will be answered as the pieces of this political puzzle continue to fall into place. Representative Alexander says the young man's parents are very concerned and upset by the attention on their son. Some wondered if Rep. Alexander will face a political backlash during his re-election bid for turning over the email that set these events in motion. He said, simply, he could.

Yea AOL Instant Messenger came on in 1995 or 1996.
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my miscellaneous ping list.
The boy's name was actually posted on FR the other day, but it was deleted by the mods.
I dont know their offical affilation but because of the area their in, where the kid goes to school, their religion plus the his myspace enties I saw you can tell they are very conservative
I was first IMing back in 1996, so the answer is a definite yes.
That's a good question, but it's worth noting that Foley's office has already confirmed the authenticity of the IM logs.
You KNOW him?
How?
(I admit that I'm short on time here)
;o)
Thank you, nutmeg!
I am in Rodney's district so I am interested in the possible repercussion angle of his Dem/Repub switch.
The first idiot I can think of is the Foley, but there's plenty more idiots who would do such a thing.
I've seen the page's name posted on 5 websites in the last 4 hours looking aorund for updated info.
I believe the boys name has been posted on some liberal websites, so I would not be surprised if it was liberals threatening him.
I have some familarity with Rodneys staff since a couplf of my friends work for him
As to the kid, I dont know him personally but I am aware of his school since we played baseball and football against them and I used to live their. His My Space spage was on the net that had a lot of info so I gleamed the rest from that. I suspect the my space page needless to say has been deleted. Sad really. He ad a lot of entries when was in Congress as a page. He was like all jazzed about the experience getting to meet all his conservative heros etc etc. Seems like a nice kid.
I don't see how anyone can be angry at this kid. Foley is lucky the kid or his father didn't clock Foley in the face.
I have thought about the following
When he switched the Democrat party went berserk. He was of course frozen out by a lot of his former friend. Sen Mary Landrieu was livid with him.
Now what makes this interesting is that (1) he did pick up a weird opponent out of no where from Alexandria for this race. However Rodney has expressed some interest in running against Sen Landrieu in 08. At least he is exploring that option.
That gets you to thinking about the timing of this too
Also and maybe more important. His staff was very upset when he switched to (r). I think most resigned on him. If a current staffer was a tad too loose lipped around a former one well I suspect that might be how it got out. Needless to say Alexanders staff want say a word on this and thankfully Rodney is one of the few that is not National TV all the time as to this
That is very interesting about Landrieu & 08. I had not heard this.
What happened to his former D.C. Democratic staff when he switched. Didn't he get a new crew & if so were there some bitter feelings from the former staffers.
I posted before reading your reply. This is what I was afraid of. Thanks for your info.
Okaay. . .can we play. . .connect the dots? Or, read a story, behind the lines?
