Rice: Nuclear Test a 'Provocative Act'

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Tuesday a North Korean nuclear test would be ``a very provocative act,'' and she prodded Asian nations to rethink their relationships with the North Koreans.

The top U.S. diplomat said the United States would have to assess its options should such a test be carried out, but she did not elaborate.

``It would be a very provocative act by the North Koreans,'' Rice said during a press conference in Cairo, second stop on a Middle East tour. ``They have not yet done it, but it would be a very provocative act.''

Rice's warning reflected widespread concern within the Bush administration. She stressed, however, that a North Korean test was an issue ``for the entire neighborhood'' and not just for the United States.

``A North Korean nuclear test ... would create a qualitatively different situation on the Korean peninsula,'' Rice said. ``I think that you would see that a number of states in the region would need to reassess where they are now with North Korea.''

The remarks appeared directed primarily at China and South Korea.

White House spokesman Dana Perino complained about North Korea's ``provocative announcement'' and said other countries should join in pressing Pyongyang to avoid testing.

A test ``would be directly contrary to the interests of all of North Korea's neighbors and to peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region,'' Perino said in a written statement.

The United States has long urged China, Pyongyang's only ally, to exert more pressure on North Korea to return to stalled diplomatic talks.

South Korea, divided from its northern neighbor for more than 50 years, has sought better relations and eventual reunification.

Do Boy forgets that we know how to do a test, too.

Just give Japan a call and ask them what they think, Do Boy.

For crying out loud, how many times in the past few months alone have I heard "A provocative act".

Here is what will happen if North Korea conducts a nuclear test:

Absolutely nothing.

The UN will do nothing except their normal bluster.

The USA will do nothing except their normal 'harsh' verbal reaction and maybe move a few ships around.

South Korea will do nothing except say they should 'open dialogue' with NK.

Folks, the world is caught in the throughs of liberalism. Time to get ready for the inevitable.

After the response to their last "provocative" act, I'm sure they're shaking in their boots. Or maybe they're just ticked off we didn't include them in the offer of reactors to Iran. The Clinton reactors must be a bit out of date by now.

It's only a matter of when.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...like anyone is going to do anything about it.
Iran thumbs its nose at the world and doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. Same goes for Irans weak missile Launches.
Why would anyone care now? Gutless wonders!

I suggest we test one of our nukes, same place and time as theirs.

If we permit this, we'll deserve our fate, Darwin and all. And that includes a nuclear-armed Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, and who the heck knows whom else -- if, that is, we survive long enough to see that.

Absolutely nothing.

Well perhaps but I think there's still a chance they'll get a sternley worded letter.

On the inevitable. I think you're right. As a nation and western culture in general we've got our heads up our a$$ and don't want to admit that "Yes Virginia there ARE bad people in the world and you CAN call religions and people bad. And when they start killing you and your friends/family off you need to kill enough of them off the rest of them sit down and shut up."

PC must die before the war on terrorism will be won.

I'll bet anyone a burger right now, that as soon as Kofi Anan's relief as Secretary general is announced, the Short, fat, Dog Eating Little Dictator will fire off a nuke test; it's almost a given at this point.

The only question is, what are we prepared to do about it??
