STILLMORE, GA. As Department of Homeland Security agents in black SUVs tooled up and down the dirt avenues of Stillmore, Ga., hundreds of undocumented people scattered into the woods like "flushed quail," one witness said. Many of those who weren't arrested fled, some to Kentucky. One family hid for two nights in a tree.
As night sets now, a sprinkling of solitary lights glow from once-crowded trailer parks. Since the Labor Day raid, Stillmore, where the wishful sign at the city limit reads "A town that is still growing," has shrunk by at least a third after more than 120 people were arrested and perhaps as many as 300 others disappeared.
"It's a ghost town," says resident Bennett Byrd. As federal, state, and local officials crack down on illegal immigrants across the country, attitudes continue to harden among those who want them to stay and those who want them to go......

"In Stillmore, the raids forced Americans to confront their own beliefs. Residents such as Larry Hadden saw friendly and "clean" people invigorating the town's economy. To see them chased "like rabbits" through the underbrush troubled him, as did watching as women and children were left behind without resources."
"Women and children hit hardest..."
You really did not need to read that far to realize this reporter's personal bias, though.

"It's a ghost town" Well, since this problem has been allowed to grow like a cancer over the last thirty years, this should come as no surprise. Twenty million illegal aliens roaming around on United States soil are bound to leave some gaps in the population once our federal laws start being enforced.
Since illegals tend to balkanize rather than integrate, it is fully predictable that this "ghost town" effect will be encountered.
It's long past overdue.

"The trailer parks are empty, people leave very, very worried, no income, no money. It's too hard over here. Stillmore is too quiet."
Well, you know the REAL economic implications of a town when the 'trailer parks' start to empty!
I liked the part where the average hourly wage increased by a dollar immediately.
Flame away!

Awwwwwww.
That reminds me of the story Sen. Blanche Lincoln (Dimwit-AR) about Katrina survivors. She said one family had to float down the river for two days on a refrigerator before they reached safety.
And I recall poor Chelsea jogging around the crumbling WTC, trying to find a payphone to call Hillary and tell her the GOP tax cuts were to blame.
Oh: Tissue alert. lol

Workers had "very good" fake documentation that fooled managers, a Crider plant spokesperson says. It's analagous to a guy who owns a bar in a college town. He knows that most of the ID's are fake, but the underage drinkers are good for business, and the owner won't get in trouble as long as the ID's are reasonably decent, which affords him plausible deniability.
I just renewed my driver's license in New Jersey. They've gotten much tougher about documentation, including the use of a workstation where your social security number is verified. The technology is there--the will isn't quite there yet.

It is kind of funny in Arkansas.
Asa Hutchinson, former deputy directory of Homeland Security - in charge of immigration issues, is running for Governor.
During his stint with HSD, he bragged that his Department was sending 300 illegals per month back to Mexico. [At that rate, it would take 16,000 years to removed them all.]
Now, running for governor, Hutchinson is running ads saying he is against illegal immigration and would be tough on illegals.
[Sorry, Asa, your record reveals your duplicitous flipflopping.]

chased "like rabbits" ..
How does that song go?
They ran thru the briars and they ran thru the brambles and they ran thru the bushes where a rabbit couldn't go.
Down the MS to the Gulf of Mexico.

Please help this poor bodunk Southerner out. I only came across a 'Church of the Latter Day Saints' in the late '70's while growing up. Are these Christian Science Monitors affiliated?

"...has shrunk by at least a third after more than 120 people were arrested and perhaps as many as 300 others disappeared....'It's a ghost town,' says resident Bennett Byrd." If 420 illegals leave and they represent more than 1/3 of your population, your town was a ghost town to start with. With a whopping population of 1,260, the illegals were probably the only thing keeping this town from inbreeding themselves until all their descendants voted Democrat.

This year, ICE has rounded up 2,100 people in workplace raids nationwide compared with 1,145 in 2005.If true, these numbers are truly pathetic.
I've seen estimates that say 1000 Criminal Aliens per month are flooding across our border. So "rounding up" 2100 doesn't even come close to the 12,000 invaders per year. ICE is definitely loosing the war. It's time for a new strategy.
And how is "rounded up" defined? And what ultimately happened to these people? How many were set free? How many were kicked out of out country?
