Warsaw commemorates fall of its tragic 1944 Uprising
02.10.2006
October 2nd marks the anniversary of the fall of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. After two months of bloody fighting against prevailing Nazi ground and air units, the Warsaw insurgents capitulated. Following the complete forced evacuation of its inhabitants, Warsaw was burned and turned into a sea of rubble at the revengeful orders of Adolf Hitler.
The heavy resistance took the toll of 18 thousand soldiers of the underground Home Army (AK) and 180 thousand civilian lives. Their tragic struggle had been witnessed by the Soviet Red Army standing idly across the Vistula river during the entire period of the Uprising. Todays anniversary is being commemorated at numerous gatherings throughout the Polish capital, which 62 years ago was to have vanished from the map of Europe.
