Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
I'm in Lake county too!
I know what your saying, but I think your putting blame on the women who were forced to leave the school building by a gun, therefore leaving the side of those children. We weren't there, but the only one to blame here is the sick man who killed these little girls. No one knows what they would really do in a scary situation like that. Yes, we'd like to think we'd know, but I bet dollars to donuts when fear is set in nothing you do makes sense at that point and you don't do a lot of thinking. I'm sure these women are going to wish they had stayed and fought, but they didn't know what was going to happen and they probably were delirious and didn't even think about anything! I don't blame them, I blame the perp and he is the one we should be slamming here, not the victims.
Will you please give it a rest?
I heard she was pregnant. For all we know, the gunman may have told her to leave and if she didn't he would shoot the children.
Read my tagline.
I'm not disagreeing. I'd like to THINK I would do everything to protect the kids by demanding to stay....but how does one know WHAT they would do unless confronted by a gun to their own head.
Wouldn't that have been a red flag to you...that something pleasant wasn't going to happen? Even more reason not to leave little children alone.
Well, what is done is done. So we need to move on from here. It is just a sad sad thing all around.
It's as if there are demons out there trying to outdo one another in horrific acts of evil.

I think so. Literally of the fallen angel kind as well as human ones.
Read my tagline.
What should the teacher have done - gotten the gunman even more worked up by not following his orders? C'mon - we're all sickened to death by this, but the person who is probably the sickest is the poor teacher.
He probably did say that. I'm sure the instinct would be to run and get HELP.
Knock it the hell off.....Children are dead...
you have freep mail
Exactly, these women may have thought it was better to leave since this perp may have told them if they don't they wou;d shoot the kids. How are these women to have known what this sick man was going to do?
I do not want to argue nor cast any more negativity here. However, if you have never had a gun pulled on you, or held to your head, please don't presume to know how you would react.
The decision forced upon this teacher will most likely haunt her for years to come.
Thank you. I think you are saying it better than I am.
STOP it!!
Well said....amen.
must had his hands full then, eh?
And I've always believed that the Amish are, in fact, the barometers of freedom in this country, and therefor the world. And, much like the "star spangled banner" still flying at "dawns early light". An Amish buggy bouncing down the road tells me that freedom still exists in this country. I also believe that there is a spirit, who's plans are threatened by the very existence of these people. And, I expect this spirit's minions to use this opportunity to try to force these people into the "21st century".

I've long believed the same thing. Thanks.
God be with each of them and especially the hurting families and relatives.
