Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
Why firefighters?...Looking for what?....explosives?....weapons?....
So we're safe for a little while? Do we ever get the perfect trifecta of national safety, when all three branches are on vacation?
Actually I heard (directly there in Lancaster) that they are ALL using cell phones. They don't like wires - regular phones are out, but cellular is OK. And they'll ride in cars, but not drive.
That's why my husband (from mid-PA, not Lancaster) says local farms will have Mennonites drive the trucks, while the rest of the work crew will be Amish.
And apparently they deliberate on whether some technology will be OK or bad for them. It's not just blanket "no technology"; they try to discern the effects. Kind of like the misunderstandings (and oversimplification) about Catholics and so on.
major horse rearing country.
There is a school in Thomasville called Paradise School for Boys
It is for troubled youths and delinquents.
I'm guessing they are looking for more evidence as to why this animal would shoot down innocent little children at school
Possibly terrorist related?
I'm serious.
There's been chatter about hitting America's most innocent.. and also that the perps won't have Islamic names...
just a thought. Hoping it's not.
Thing about the Amish is that they're basically a lot more normal than people think. Some actually aren't pleasant people, are greedy, etc. but no higher a % than the population at large. I guess it varies from community to community but at least in Pennsylvania they don't seem nearly as isolated and closed off as you'd think (one complicating factor is you have a complex spectrum from Old Order Amish all the way up to Mennonites, who wear simple clothes but drive cars, etc.)
Other interesting thing about them is most of them are QUITE wealthy - they usually have the best farmland in a given area, and, obviously, aren't blowing money on a lot of the stuff a typical.
One thing that always struck me funny the last few years passing through Intercourse and Paradise is all the Amish kids tooling around on bright shiny silver Razor scooters.
The Amish have guns. When I lived in Pennsylvania, I hunted for ground hogs on their property. During, bear and deer season, they would join me hunting. They don't believe in taking a life, with a firearm.
Could have been drug-related...I'm surprised there haven't been the usual knee-jerk reactions claiming that!
MSNBC confirming 6 dead - thinking that includes the shooter
A smaller version of Beslan?
What is this? An epidemic? Prayers for those at the school and their families.
Oh, my. How sad.
My G_d, In an Amish school? What the heck is going on?
DO you remember the "dry-runs" of muslim men riding school buses? So you are not off talking about the possibility..
I know the airstrip well. And the SPCA just underwent a major expansion.
There's a blue & white sign on the westbound lane, which says "Paradise". Both Paradise and Paradise Twp are in Lancaster Cty, so it can't be them.
I'm checking into rehab... I'm losing it. I need to take a ride out there and get a pic of it, and find out what it is.
The high school staff thought I was a bit nuts when I called on 9/11 to ask if they had guards or were watching the outside of the school...I told them that the next step with these terrorists would be to hit schools to make the public think that there is no safe place. It's all about psyops.
