Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
There is a difference between violence and defense. We'll see.
No matter what the laws, this teacher would not have been armed, nor would she have shot this maniac.
That's how they get away with it. They make us think they have the power. You are dead anyway...
The legislators know these silly laws won't work, and when they don't work they will pass others until they reach their real goal.... we all know what that is.
I was in no way stating that the children should have confronted the shooter...I believe, however, that schools should have adults prepared to do so. I know that the Amish are against war but I can't believe that they are willing to sit by while their children are slaughtered.
They don't drive cars or fly in airplanes but they didn't object to their use today when it meant saving lives.
My fervent belief (acknowledging that I dont know any more about the situation "on the ground" than ANY of you do), is thus....
I would imagine that any and all older teenagers (NOTE I did not say "ADULT"--that was ordered to leave, probably ran as fast as their legs could take them to notify their fathers, mothers, or find anyone who had a phone!
Prayers up for ALL those effected by this horrendous act
His answer, "pray for us."
That is the kind of folks they are.
I agree Cindy, I think it is time for kids to be taught that if a man or woman comes into your school with a gun, the best thing you can do is all charge him and get the gun away from him. Chances are more lives would be spared if this was taught. I think back at Columbine and think of all the kids in the library. They all could have jumped Eric and Dylan and gotten those guns away if they had tried. Instead the laid still and were killed, no defense! Personally, I'd rather go to my death fighting than laying down and letting someone take my life.
It is just rough to hear each one of these stories as none of them you hear of anyone fighting back with the killers. It is time to hear something different should God forbid something like this happens again!
It's always nice when someone who knows nothing about the Amish, has suggestions for how they should change their lives and religion.
They are pacifists. They are bound to this pacifism by their faith in God. They are not going to become violent, even if their mortal bodies depend on it.
your right and we just have to respect how they want to live. But I bet you after this nightmare that clan of Amish may think otherwise.
Personally to each our own. If you don't want to defend yours or your families life it is your choice. I on the other hand will fight if someone tries to harm me or my family!
I think they may fly in airplanes. I know they use public transportation. I used to see them visiting D.C. often. It's not that they think technology is evil in and of itself. They just try to minimize what they believe are its negative effects.
It is much less likely that they will ever advocate violence in self-defense. Pacifism is one of their primary doctrines.
Now if it were me...
:') What ever it takes to get out or stop the perp if you can't. There is a reason why they hold the girls. Right now IMO we are viewed as passive and weaker. Easier to control. They would have to keep a close eye on a room full of boys. I'm just saying that these evil people need to know when they go in that they won't take the girls easy. Remember those 2 cheerleaders that were kidnapped. According to them, the whole time it was "how to get him"
that's exactly how they are....
Being of the world, yes I can believe it, and we actually had an intruder alert drill last Thursday before the last rash of school attacks took place. Of course I dont have a firearm but I do have a nine iron in my coat closet at school. I figure if the real thing ever happens, at least I will leave a dent in someone head.
They do. I've seen a Wal-Mart that had a special buggy parking section in its lot for the Amish customers.
That is the kind of folks they are.
**************
Yes, that is the kind of folks they are. Prayers for the Amish community for all they have suffered. Their lives will never be the same.
Praying for them. They are good people. They are just like the rest of us. Who would have thought it could happen?
>This is not AQ so why bring that up?<
They know that already? Had this guy been in prison? Lots of recruiting going on in prison.
OK, thanks, for that information.
